What is the best software for producing trance/house/dubstep? I kind of want to try something new before this year is up, so next year I can say, "Yeah...I produced that".
I'm currently running a macbook (regular) with leopard 10.6.8. (I don't wanna update!!)

    Thanks, all :mates:

    Hi,
many folks recommend FL Studio for the mentioned genres, it might be as well what you're looking for, if by 'software' you mean DAW.

Logic Pro (ver 9) should work with Snow Leopard. Very popular DAW with those genres, as is also Ableton Live

The software is really incidental, if you're on Mac then use Logic Pro. If it's good enough for Front Line Assembly then it will work for you too.

A lot of people really love Ableton for it's session view where you can break out of the usual timeline workflow and experiment so that could be useful when brainstorming. Really I generally will move between DAWs and use each one for what it excels in. Ableton might be good for brainstorming but mixing is so much better in other DAWs. I still think Logic would be perfect and it does some things a lot better such as it's simple implementation of polymeters. Why hasn't any other software done this? Developers should be ashamed.

The age old question. I'm glad no one has started bashing a particular DAW yet. It's so personal and the variety out there is huge! I'm between DAW's and can definitely attest to the strengths and weaknesses that each carry. (And I agree with Catalyst on the non standard mixer for Ableton) I think you should start on Logic, find some great tutorials and jump in. If it's not blowing your hair back after a couple of weeks then try out FL or Ableton. Only you can really decide what you want at the end of the day

    Jennifer,
as the named genres could not possibly be further apart, maybe you make up your mind first. There are fundamental differences in terms of production as well as the creative approach.
I suggest, and that's not an offense :), magix music maker. It comes packed with tons of samples and kits and it will take you to a pleasant result relatively fast.
You won't get professional results out of it that reach the pinnacle of house production artisanship but it's a good way to start, especially since you don't know yet what you're after.

Most of them should be fine. The most important aspect is to find one which kinda fits your personality and way of working/producing.
They're mostly the same thing, only the GUI, workflow and concept differs. You can't stick to just a single option here. Make sure you try all the recommendations you've already got from the members above me and see which DAW may suit your personally.

Off Topic: Hey guys, i have a new girlfriend, she's called "Manus Dextro". *yes*

    Cheers!

    No doubt LOGIC.
BEST midi indeed and best synths in a synth style.
Update with Mavericks too, lost some but the gain is awesome!

    GENRE DOESN'T DETERMINE THE DAW.

just pick one and go with it! you can accomplish about the same things with most daws as long as you know how to use it. work flow is the biggest difference, and that just comes down to being comfortable with your software

Thank you everyone for your insights. I'll try Logic pro and hopefully I'll like it. I've [tried] Abelton, but it's a bit difficult...My friend has FL installed on his computer but I haven't asked him if I could try it yet...

I prefer Logic over any other DAW but Ableton is the most easy to use.

Garageband, Logic and FL Studio are good places to start. Some people swear by Reaper and Ableton. Haven't used them, so I won't diss them, but some of my favorite artists and colleagues swear by them. Find what you feel comfortable with and proceed from there. Welcome to our little corner of the Internets.

I wouldn't vouch for Ableton that much regarding "ease of use" on the first sight. For some, might look like a spaceship's control room.

I've tried but I don't get along with Ableton. I really wanted to but there are many bugs and it's just not my thing. I really wanted it to be but it just never happened. *no*

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
An empty/new Ableton Live project already looks cramped, to me. I'm an old dog.
