Go ahead and check out this video demonstrating the Windows 9 start menu:

After getting a look at it officially, I must say that it does look rather simplistic. While I am not overly fond of it, I cannot say that it looks terrible (in fact, I think it looks pretty cool).

Obviously, as the title shows, Windows 9 is codenamed "Threshold." Windows 9 will officially be demonstrated by Microsoft on the 30th of this month as expected.

The very same day they unveil it, we may also have access to the technical preview from a public release. As "enterprise" suggests, we may also get a preview of server variant of Windows 9.

Keep in mind, however, that with all this said we still do not even know what the final name of the OS will even be, so we use Windows 9 as a placeholder for now.

Metro apps will not be available in windowed mode and the charms bar is completely removed. And it is official that we have our keyboard and mouse-oriented OS back for our personal enjoyment and uses for efficiency.

I can say with utmost certainty that I will be giving this a shot.

P.S.: Please cut the crap about how bad Windows is and how great OSX is. I don't intend seeing that type of "war" here. Either you prefer is good, anything else is up to people's taste.

I agree, it looks good. Way better than W8, in my opinion.

I've been meaning to make a post about this but I've been so busy especially lately. Big shocker there. I might actually buy this when it comes out because they're beefing up the anti-piracy measures and even 8 was only activateable via KMS servers which are a huge pain in the ass. There were rumours that it might be free but I believe that it might be but only for other platforms, the desktop version I'm sure they will charge for. Anyway we will know more information in a few days. Also something not mentioned here is that it will feature Cortana, Microsoft's personal voice assistant.

I loved Windows 8, then 8.1 came out, and they fixed almost every think i didn't feel conformable with on Windows 8, People hated it, i did love it, Win8.1 Wins every Benchmark tests (On the same Machines) and i even love it more, i tried to explain this to everybody but that didn't change their minds, they claim that the Start menu was a bad thing, and i said that i love it, and i really do love it, i feel like Microsoft did bring the Future to Us, loved the way how every thing is Presented, how stuff moves bla bla bla, i love change and changing and i really hate people that they're stuck on one thing, and here Windows 9 is coming now, hope they make it even better. Microsoft is forcing people to quit their Old OSs and i really support this.
I Tested Mac OSx, ( Sorry Evorax LOL  ) Win has some really good Points, and Macs too, they are basically the same, Maybe OSx has some Visual advancement, but i really do love them Both.

People do hate Windows cause of the Blue screen, and i almost never had it, Know why ? cause i really take care of my Computer, cleaning it almost every day, defrag my hard drive once a week, updating my drivers from time to time. if you want your computer to Run Well, then clean it and take care of it, imagine that it is like a car, cars needs maintenance, and PCs Too, i don't know why i'm even writing this anyway,

i'm probably gonna wait for the final release of Windows 9 and check if my fav. Software run Well on it, then i'm gonna install it on my New computer As soon as i have it.

Keep up the Good work Microsoft, i'm really impressed by what've done so far!

Anyway, Windows 9 is gonna be optimized for the 5th Intel possessors, DDR4 and DirectX 12, can't wait to put my hands on these stuff and test it! i'm so exited ! LOL :bleh:

IMHO this is the most interesting part, even if I'm waiting for PCI express 4.
Usually I stay 2 versions behind of windows, as Microsoft use to drop a new version just when the prior one is recently finish and working fine. Actually I'm on win7 x64SP1 and never ever had a BSD.
Even so I give my system monthly maintenance.

Firstly, I don't care what it looks like, especially if it obstructs my workflow and you have to pass through hoops only to start a bloody program or two. I just want it to run my DAW, synths, and plugins properly, without any problems. Then I also see a reason to move my DAW and audio programs to something else only if that else works better, faster, and more efficiently with them. No OS after Windows XP delivered that. All Windows after XP work worse and less efficient with audio, just look at the benchmarks. http://www.dawbench.com/ Since I'm a sceptic, I tested them all myself, too, and it [W8] simply doesn't work better with the plugins, and neither W7x64. It's all going downhill after XP. For DAW use it is absolutely unnecessary to move either from XP or W7 to something newer from MS. They also just make it more complicated to get your work simply - done.

They won't see me use any of that Microsoft mumbo-jumbo kiddy OSes after Windows 7 x64 for audio. W7 is already crippled enough performance-wise in comparison to XP. But I have to use it for multiple reasons, primarily because I want to use more RAM than XP x86 supports [you get to use more RAM only with W7 x64] and secondly because some audio apps don't support XP any more.

And if you need an OS for Internet use.... good luck with Windows. I use XP and W7 with network completely disabled. That's the only way to have secure Windows. To keep them completely shut.

And if you use it to play games. Sure - it is a good OS for gaming. That's pretty much all there is to it and I highly doubt it that W9 will be any better.

    Cheers :mates: !

Speaking as someone who has been using computers to make music since before DOS (Commodore & Atari) please don't forget to take the usual precautions before upgrading to a new OS. The most important thing you can do is to make sure there are working drivers for your audio and/or MIDI interface available before making the switch. Even if they are available it pays to scour the user and support boards to make sure those drivers actually work properly. There is always a chance your outboard gear is old enough to have been retired by the manufacturer or the company has gone out of business in which case there will be no new driver updates. There is nothing worse than upgrading to a new OS and immediately finding out half your gear and software don't work - and I'm speaking from personal experience.

It's actually bizarre that people are getting excited over a start menu! That is a fundamental part of windows and should be there by default. There is nothing new in this version to make it appeal to me. When they actually do something exciting and interesting then it might appeal to me.

The fact they still have hints of win 8 graphics in the start menu is an immediate reason to not be interested in this. Microsoft need to distance themselves from the win 8 abomination because it's a pile of crap made by fools.

Microsoft usually make a duff OS every other one, but looks like it's getting more regular.

I am going to stick with win 7, it's just right for me.

I really don't understand why some people should start calling stupid Windows8's designers just because they added a so called "Metro" window and a "charm bar", neglecting the actual performance improvement which was the most important aspect.
Does that "GUI" concept is really that killer or annoying that is really harmful to your everyday usage? Does it killed your eyes? Does it killed your children? It really made you poorer than before? I really can't find the reason for so much hate.

People just follow the herd, if a few guys say they hate windows8, then they will influence others, then others will influence others and so on. Just because is fancy to
follow the "hating Windows8" fashion. Is really that hard to build your own opinion without being necessary to quote the hater's words acting like you actually expressed your own opinion?

I personally worked on both Windows 8 and 8.1 for months and there was absolutely NO REASON to hate this O.S. and i used it for my main workstation with absolutely no problem. I also use Nebula and i realised the instances loads faster on Win.8/8.1 and i also can add a few more compared to Win.7. I don't have to prove you anything, just test
it for yourself instead of quoting haters's words.

Also, if Windows8 graphical concept was totally wrong, then can you share your opinion about how it should've looked in order to be more eye-candy? It should've feature some "candy-crush" backrounds and rainbows everywhere you click? I'm just curious HOW you would've made it or see it better.

The last test on DAWBench are for Windows 7 so the point is moot since Windows 7 is a resource hog which Windows 8 greatly improved. Windows is more secure than OSX at this point and the only reason it might not seem that way is simply market share. Windows 8 is actually much better for audio than 7 as Evorax confirmed with his stuff loading faster. They completely rewrote the audio stack and simultaneously made it more stable because of this.

How can you say if you're interested or not from a minute video with featuresets that haven't even been announced yet. You can, as seen in the video, customize the start menu however you want including removing all the extras you don't need. Personally I don't mind them and think they're rather cool. They're simply widgets but instead of the desktop they're now on the start menu, so why not have the weather and news right there. People are so resistant to change.

Just like Windows 7 was Windows Vista 6.2, a company introduces something new and builds upon the concept. Nothing crazy.

Yeah, the editable start menu is really great, because it would serve the picky guys nicely, having the possibility to shape it just the way they want it. I hope they can even shape it enough to look like Win7 if that's what they wish about it. When they've heard about windows 8 or 9, i guess they only imagined a Win7 with a different theme (rofl) and no extra new concepts, but when they found the new concepts they just simply couldn't accept the change. And the negative opinions was like an IceBucketChallange but they've used hate instead of ice and that's how it became viral against Win8/8.1.

Also, i almost can bet the Win9 will be packed way more than we can see in that short video, and btw i didn't know about that "Cortana" thing so thanks for the intel.
