Classic American EQ is what the EQ P50A module screams about. Its three band proportional Q design — the result of an ingenious mind and clever engineering — made it progress very fast to the position of a "go to" equalizer on many custom designed modular consoles of the late '60s and '70s. It then gave birth to a portable, modular design concept.

IK Multimedia meticulously modeled all of the 2520 op amp based circuitry to unveil the sonic goodness and detail that made this module ubiquitous on any major record production for tracking and mixing duties.

Three bands of sonic excellence for a total of twenty-one frequencies make repeatability very easy, and their careful selection allows extremely musical results. Faithful to the original hardware circuit design, the EQ P50A features several "IK-Style" digital-domain improvements to this already time-honored sonic print.

Following in the footsteps of its simpler three band P50A brother, the EQ P50B module expands in flexibility by adding a fourth EQ band.

This module is so great sounding because of the rather simple all-discrete circuit schematic of the original hardware it's based on, whose key point is the 2520 op-amp. Its four peaking bands with seven selected frequencies cover the whole spectrum and then some. It also allows for the overlapping of bands for complex EQ shapes — this is invaluable in mixing sessions where the proper EQ is the key to finding the right balance and position of a track within a mix.

Simplicity, though, doesn't mean lack of tone: the EQ P50B doesn't have many of the bell and whistle features others offer — like complex and eye-catching but oftentimes distracting displays. The ease of use of its two knobs per band enhances the analog feel of the module by providing the instant gratification of turning a knob and hearing a result.

The same "make it better" approach to the user interface of the digital model applied to the 3 band version was kept in the EQ P50B.

This EQ was originally designed as a variation to the standard three and four band console EQs. It bears the same all discrete signal path and proportional Q design of the EQ P50A and B modules but uses a ten band graphic approach instead of the semi-parametric three and four band design of the other modules.

This results in several differences, but still a killer sound.

The core circuitry that this module was based on is still the 2520 op amp. So the same sonic character of the two parametric models is retained here, but the graphic approach makes it quick and easy to dial in a particular shape, which is clearly shown by the ten vertical sliders.

This module is handy when you need to make EQ adjustments on larger parts of the spectrum instead of a restricted area. Boosting or cutting several bands at once will radically alter the sound of a track, be it a thin, weak snare that needs low end or a dull vocal that needs to be opened up.

This module is a great complement to the EQ P50A and EQ P50B parametric modules.

Wow I love API. Never liked T-Racks stuff until they did the UREI emus, those two are really good. :wow:
Hope these new two are at the same level. I would have loved to see a 2500 emu too, I really like the Waves one (only Waves comp I use from time to time).

    @matt: DAT ! *yes*
    Only one problem: iLok :snuffy:
But PE1C and CL1B are very very good. PE1C is the only Pultec style EQ emu I ever liked. And liked a lot.
Apart from Nebula ones obviously (only one I didn't tried is UAD one so I don't know).

I find myself only using API2500 and 550A in waves bundle, and sometimes the SSL Black channel.
I liked also the PiE comp and helios EQ emu but I have not installed anymore. Only API+SSL+Vitamin right now.
Gonna check asap the new AbbeyRoad one, I heard good things bout it
