    hey everybody,

i'm not sure if this is the right place to adress this - please correct me if it's not.

it has come to my attention that freeware has started to be uploaded on audioz a while ago.

i have very mixed feelings about this. back in the days, when i was active in the scene, uploading freeware was really against the codex, even worse than linkstealing.
don't get me wrong: i really like to know about great free stuff. but there is a rule: if something is freely available on the net, you don't mirror it (without explicit permission), you link to it.
this has multiple reasons: first, don't steal credits. second, don't confuse stuff. freeware are not warez so don't upload freeware to warez sites.

so that's my suggestion: post links to freeware on audiosex and keep audioz clean.
sure, i know, that won't boost your uploaded account...

what do you guys think on this issue?

Most of the freeware I've seen on there has the original download links from where ever it's being hosted by the developer.

im fine with that as long as the original dev link is provided too, when you have a UL Premium account for example, you dont care to download it from UL too.

and when no freeware dev link is provided you can always google for yourself and find the dev link. but most of the members/visitors are to lazy for that.

When I see freeware, anywhere, I always go to dev site 'cause I think it's the right thing to do to show respect to someone who give his work for free.

Agree Oly, on including the dev site being listed so that people
have the option of going to their site.. just as we stress "thanking" the contributors here.

My pet peeve is demos being posted.. especially when there are means to avail the users/members of fully functional fun.. !!
( and I'm also aware.. that some are posted with at least the disclosure that they are pre release testing / demos )

also... can someone tell me why it's necessary to pw rars? that has generally been considered bad form for the longest time..
if someone is worried about it.. use the doorlock/shoot feature of peeplink...??

so much for my 2 ¢

because cyberlockers scan uploads, i know for example that mediafire is scanning uploads. once added a password you can do lots of things you cant do w/o.

Basic you´re right! It´s really way out "releasing" free releases from a server - especially if you can add the link of the original developer ... another thing is the "facepuke" freebies ... then I think it´s ok to deliver the direct link, so non-FB can get them without having a FB account!

I think the problems arise when people don't realize that AudioZ is not the scene though their paths may cross. Scene rules, codex, etc. do not apply to us except so much as we think it makes sense to apply it. Besides sharing scene releases we also contribute quite a few of our own so I think we have a say in how we do things and scene people should respect that. I have to say it gets really annoying for us to be held to these standards as if they're somehow infallible after how many years? You need to realize that AudioZ is a personal project with a personal vision and mission statement. I think we do a good job of doing what's right and why we do things the way we do them makes sense as well. For example some freeware like what zeusgodbcn posted the other day is no longer available so we're now keeping those releases alive. Then there's the fact that some freeware makes you jump through hoops for a download or they track your IP so there's that angle. Beyond that people like to come to one place and get all their audio needs taken care of, I think freeware gives a lot of members insight into some plugins they may not have known about which translates to more interest and even feedback for developers. The homepage links are always provided and I always remind people to download it from the developer website where applicable. Scene people just can't let go of this "it has to be the way we say it is everywhere we are" mentality. We need to be able to try new things even if they may not be agreed upon by everyone. We need to be able to evolve.

I think that's a very reasonable point of view and perfectly understandable. I can totaly relate to the aspects you mentioned, catalyst.
    Thanks for clearing this up"
