Well doubling it, hard panning each one left and right and then putting a slight delay on one is a good start...

You could put a delay on it like sheppi free spatial enhancer (based on Bob Katz's haas delay), but I don't like the sound of it.

What I prefer are combers like Nugen Stereoizer with ITD turned off.

Agreed -- Layering/Doubling (Multitrack-Instances), Panning, a bit of filtering, and some effects processing (In The Mix) should do it
If you can locate it -- SPL Vitalizer has a nice subtle effect on independent tracks too

MathewLane DrMS Spatial Processor v3.2

Warning : Doesn't work here in Cubase 5.1 (AiR), even with Xlutop Chainer or EnergyXT2.

I've been using waves doubler 2, it just doubles the sound and pans it for you, with eq option and a few other things. works well most of the time
ill try nugen stereoizer looks interesting thanks

Adobe Audition has some pretty solid stereo expansion in the edit mode, but it works better when you start with a stereo or doubled tracks. Never had to look around for plug ins but i'm sure there are plenty. If you want a vocal track to sound like it's coming from everywhere and nowhere at the same time, try 4 copies with a few milliseconds delay, all slightly different amounts but not enough to sound like a double, and pan those, 2 all the way left and right, 2 more at different amounts of left and right and leave the 1st one centered. Then tinkering is encouraged. If you find something you like, bounce it to a stereo track and then apply stereo effects to that. Much fun, but try not to get lost in there.

Ableton Live has an "Audio Effect" called "Utility"
Theres a widening option in there.

Another thing I like to use is iZotope ozone 4 / 5.
Both are great, and while specifically made for mastering (I believe), you can also use them for synths/leads whatever.
