I luckily never got GAS for expensive physical hardware. That said I spend a few grands on DAWs and VSTs over the last 6 years when I started
I always try to defend / cope by saying I could have had one expensive synth like a groove synthesis 3rd wave - or all the plugins I have (and interestingly also use most of them), and then there would still be like 1k left depending on the model.

Arturia Plugin bundle, Korg Plugin bundle, Ableton Suite, FL All Plugin bundle, Soundtoys, Serum 2, NI Komplete, East West Orchestras and a good Midi Keyboard... incredible stuff. I still don't have it all - nothing from u-He unfortunately - but eventually I started being happy with my setup and had enough. Didn't buy anything big this year :guru:

I used to have GAS. Hardware and software, tons of it.

Two things cured me of it:
1: Unused gear would no longer work after years of sitting around doing nothing. = wasteful.

    And most important:
2: I really dialed into what I want to do and eliminated anything that would distract me.

Technically I still own a lot of hardware because I own a little studio, but I don't use any of it and I don't work there.

In my personal setup at home. The gear I actually use on the regular, instrument wise:
I went from 28 synths to 4 synths.
From 13 guitars to 2 guitars. 1 electric, 1 acoustic.
From 4 basses to 1 electric bass.
From several bass and guitar amps to 1 small guitar amp, no bass amp. And the guitar pedal collection shrank to 4.

I did keep all my classic samplers (EMU, Akai, Ensoniq & Roland) because I use them like processors.

I kept a couple old cheap processors for their lo-fi grit, but I mostly use the software emulations of a few key pieces of hardware I sold.

Plugins went from over a 1K to:
    1 Piano
    6 Reverb
    3 Delay
    2 EQ
    2 Chorus
    1 Flanger
    1 Phaser
    4 Dynamic processors
    1 Consol Channel Strip
    1 Drum (Superior Drummer)
    4 miscellaneous wacky FX
4 Synths, which are stand in or emulations of the hardware synths I use

    Other than that I have:
Roland E-kit that was a gift (+Superior Drummer)
    A couple cheap mics
and of course the computer/display, RME interface + Bitwig +reference monitors.

I have not bought anything since my Oberheim OB-X8, one of the 4 synths I use.

I've been thinking hard about buying that Behringer Wave since it came out, as it would fit perfectly into what I'm doing and I don't have that old school wavetable sound. The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave doesn't sound quite as gritty and old from what I've heard, plus it's way overkill for my use, so that would be wasteful, no matter how much I love it.

That long standing consideration aside, I will not be buying any gear/software at all, unless it's to replace something that no longer works.

    GAS cured.

It's a common problem for music producers, try to avoid GAS triggering foods like beans, lentils, broccoli, carbonated drinks, and artificial sweeteners. It really help and make your partner smiling again when in small rooms or elevators.

I have been a victim of GAS since 1977. I always thought it was a bad thing mainly because it was so intrusive in my relationships. Overseas trips? Holidays? New car? Nope. Need money now because I just found an ARP2600 for sale! I must have it! Why? Because I bought one two years earlier and sold it because I didn't use it. But this one will be different. But it wasn't. I sold it and I was still suffering GAS. I still have GAS but the difference now is my partner doesn't suggest I should do other things, she asks me "what are you going to do instead?" and there it is. The answer is the same as it was in 1977. I don't want to do anything else. This is what gives me pleasure. Please inform me if you know where I can find a cheap original ARP2600. I need to buy a third one. But I swear...... I'll keep this one.
