Thomas Fey (born 9 November 1960; died on or before 27 June 2026) was a German conductor and pianist.

Fey studied piano and conducting at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim; he received further training in conducting from mentors including Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Leonard Bernstein.
While still a student, he founded the Heidelberg Motet Choir (1985) and the Schlierbach Chamber Orchestra (1987); the latter evolved into the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra in 1993. As conductor of these ensembles, he performed across Europe as well as in North and South America, establishing the orchestra's reputation as one of today's leading historically informed ensembles. His repertoire focused on works from the Baroque, Viennese Classical, and early German Romantic periods. Soloists such as Rudolf Buchbinder, Wilhelm Bruns, Nelson Freire, Bernd Glemser, Cyprien Katsaris, Fazıl Say, Gerrit Zitterbart, and Thomas Zehetmair performed regularly with Fey and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.

Starting in 1991, Fey organized an annual festival with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. The "Heidelberg Mozart Weeks" were succeeded in 2003 by *LA PASSIONE*, a music festival with a broader artistic and programmatic scope. In 2003, Fey also founded the Mannheim Mozart Orchestra, which made its stage debut on January 27, 2006—Mozart’s 250th birthday. With this orchestra, he championed works by Mozart’s contemporaries—artists who are often unjustly forgotten today—such as Ignaz Holzbauer, Antonio Salieri, and Franz Xaver Süßmayr. Recordings featuring largely unknown overtures, stage music, and ballet music by Salieri were released in 2008 and 2010.

Fey’s CD recordings, released by Hänssler Verlag—including over 20 symphonies by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy—received acclaim from the specialist press. The recording of Beethoven’s Fourth and Sixth Symphonies received a nomination for the “Cannes Classical Award 2003.” Fey’s second Salieri album was nominated for a Grammy Award in December 2010.

Following a severe accident in 2014, Thomas Fey was forced to give up his professional activities.[2][3] He died in June 2026 from the effects of the severe traumatic brain injury he had sustained in the 2014 accident.
