Equally important, we meticulously emulated the sonic signature and behavior of the original hardware's legendary analog filters provided by the renowned CEM3379 IC. We also precisely recreated its four DCAs, four independent multistage envelopes, three LFOs, amplitude modulation, oscillator sync, and expanded its modulation system. Its accuracy is such that the ESQ-1 software supports drag-and-drop import of individual patches and patch banks from ESQ-1 SysEx files, or directly via MIDI from the hardware. Additionally, the software can export SysEx patch files that are compatible with the original hardware.

It looks beautiful - better than the original. I had one for about 3 months one summer - between school terms. I was coming off the DX-7. The whole concept and on board sequencer were appealing to me, so I bought one.

I tried to dig deep and make some music with it. It was, or rather it sounded godawful - not a pretty or usable sound on it.

I traded it in three months later, the day the Roland D-50 came out. I never want to hear an ESQ-1 again.

That said, this virtual emulation looks really nice - well done Cherry Audio Graphics person(s).

The GUI looks as dark and brittle as it sounded raw.

I owned an SQ-80... more baked in waves, poly-AT etc.

I’ve been waiting for this to get a dedicated plugin, now we have another classic available to us, something that might be more digital and have some different timbres… I do have a feeling eventually they’ll make an SQ80 plugin, those two might possibly go together… what I REALLY wanna see is the VFX/Fizmo as a plugin if Ensoniq is still on the table

 

I was at Sam Goody in about 1978 fully prepared to buy a DX7 like so many others when this wild kinda guy approached my while playing one. He said to get the ESQ-1 because of the sequencer and because I'd wind up sounding like everyone else. It was like $1200 and would be my first synth. I had the sales dude throw in a coupla cables and I bought it.

This Cherry version sounds pretty good to me.

It would be nice to have the ability to load your own single-cycle waveforms.

Same story for me. I wanted one so bad, then I finally stumbled upon one. I was pretty disappointed to say the least. I mean, the factory presets suck ass, but I tried numerous others banks too, and wasn't that impressed either.

The actual analog filter is gorgeous, but the overall sound is very "DX like".

But the ESQ is actually a beast of a synth, you just need to program it yourself...and you need a computer editor to do so.[/QUOTE]
