    Hello,

I treated myself and now have some really nice hardware, an old dream come true

I think I'm using it well, but I don't know anyone to talk to about it, and I'm wondering if there's a better or different way to do it. So I'd like to get your opinion on how I'm using it ! :dunno:

I generally only use it for mastering.

    - First, I put the EQ, a Wes Audio Hyperion, in Mid Side mode.
    - Then I put the first compressor, a VCA, the Elysia Xpressor Classic, followed by a second compressor, a Vari-Mu, the Wes Audio Rhea. I use the compressors for glue and color.
    - To finish, I put two Neve 542 in "red" mode to add the warmth of a band (the blue mode cuts the highs too much, and I already have a lot of bass in my tracks).
    - I'm very careful with the gain staging.
    - At this stage I usually tweak my first EQ settings a bit.
    - Then come the software clipper and limiter.

What do you think of my chain?

    :thanks:

Any different order and chain for any different reason is fine as well.
    I'd delete almost everything.

That looks pretty standard setup to me & probably the way i would go.
You can obviously try a few different things but i can't see you ending up with anything dramatically different.

Unless I'm mastering my own stuff, I've found that adding saturation on top of box tone gets you in a cycle where every new bit of saturation seems better than before. That said, my mastering chain is somewhat similar (except for EQ/Comp choice), but I also add a wave of correction before hitting the limiter, which are TDR Arbiter followed by TDR Limen and lastly Newfangled Fixate Midrange. That's mostly when I'm working on other people's music, when it's mine I usually have most of it solved during the mix.

This is the only thing i didn't liked at all. There's no way to clip the output on the analog chain? A software clipper is handy to replace a convertion clipping, but if you clip on the analog domain you're probably free from most of BS that comes with digital clippers. Especially because a clipper lays more on the artistic side rather than the technical side IMO.

There are some damn good clippers nowadays, go take a look at Kraftur's soft clipper or the newly released Uni-L. Even StandardClip in Soft Clip Pro mode is amazing and aliasing-free.

You’ve got M/S EQ, VCA compression, Vari-Mu compression, dual 542s, then clipping and limiting after all of that. Each stage makes sense on its own, but stacked together they can smooth transients and increase density to the point of that “expensive blur” effect if you’re not very careful with how much each one is actually doing.

In some material that’s desirable, but in punch driven electronic music it can start to reduce transient contrast and energy.

On the clipping side, I’m actually fine with a pre-limiter digital clipper in that chain as long as it has proper delta monitoring. At that point you’re already dealing with harmonic and ultrasonic byproducts from the analog stages anyway, so a pre-limiter clipper becomes more of a controlled peak shaving tool. If the delta is just catching transient overs and not reshaping tone, then it’s basically transparent peak management rather than a creative distortion stage. In that scenario you want the delta to be almost inaudible and have to bypass toggle the clipper to microscope level dial it in.

You could also skip the clipper entirely and just hit the limiter directly, and in a lot of cases that works perfectly fine. The clipper just becomes an extra option for controlled peak shaping so the limiter isn’t doing all the work. You might even add something like TDR Ultrasonic in there if this is a template you are using. It doesn't always need to be enabled either, just like the clipper.

If i was using this gear probably the Vari Mu and the Clipper would be 100% circunstancial. If i liked the Vari Mu harmonic distorion, it would be engaged but without deafult compression. As OP said he/she gain stages stuff, i believe unwanted distortion is not an issue, so i would define tasks for each one of those processings and if they were outperforming something just turn off or engage (for example, the tube compression).

But all of this is vague without the style of music OP produces. This chain the way it is could be the right amout of colour or way too much. We don't have values for the compression and the processing amount of the 542. Those processors are very respectful but they can be rock and roll if the user wishes so.

I agree, those clippers are proven quality tools. But dialing in the distortion on the analog stage can make you bounce the track straight on the limiter without figuring much about cold values and graphs. The oldschool way.

I'm a big fan of clipping on the hardware, but I've learned the hard way mastering some heavy rock that the transients will just fuck off the more you start hitting each analog gear. If you want that dry, hard hitting snare and kick, maybe limit yourself to a cleaner EQ and comp (I like the Xfilter and Tegeler Creme), the rest is pure surgery in delta. Unfun stuff, but I've been enjoying the mastering engineer work :dunno:

This would be more than enough for me when it comes to "analog mojo" on my master bus. After that i would be very picky about anything on my chain. The EQ, Elysia Xpressor and the 542 would be my standard chain if i was using OP's gear.

    Anyone using Portico MBP?

Absolutely love it (Acustica Snow MB) for my own EDM on 2 buss, probably real hardware sounds completely sublime.:bow:

Maybe having an easy way to switch things around could be useful to you? Compressing before EQ can be preferable at times, as well as using the EQ to compensate or shape the colour of the other stuff afterwards, but reconnecting everything (or changing order of 500 modules) can also be a bother, so unless you already have a way of doing that maybe check that out?

I never met a plugin that gave me that "wow" feeling on this. It's a very common profile on the .nam world as well. Maybe i'm just on SSL Fusion team

But on the present date i'm using Elysia Alpha Compressor 2 from PA to do this mastering saturation thing. I love the sound of the transformer saturation and soft clipper. I'm using the Stereo Width tool as well. The compressor is bypassed on deafult (not because it sounds bad, it's actually the opposite); it just adds a lot to the sound just by playing with those other settings.

I prefer the SSL Fusion for the HF compressor, but I'm biased since I learned mixing with the SSL sound. I do like the saturation and widener on the Neve tho.

Thanks, your answers are appreciated

To answer a few questions, I'm a techno producer (raw & hypnotic (and sometimes minimal)).

I don't compress beyond 4dB with slow attack and release.

For the clipper, my preference go for Standard Clip; I love it.

Frequently I use a first clipper in hard mode, light, just to cut the peaks. Then I add a second std clip in soft clip (pro) mode to relieve the limiter. Finally, I use the FF L2, which is usually quite light (around 2dB). I'm currently testing other limiters, but I always come back to the L2 for now.

I used to apply EQ after compression, but I figured it was better to control the signal before applying the compressor.
The difference is minimal, but it's there.

I can limit with the Elysia XPressor (and even do negative ratios!). I've already tried it of course but maybe not enough :)
So you suggest I try :
Eq -> Vari-Mu compressor for glue -> Neve 542 for warmth -> Std Clipper for peaks -> Elysia XPressor in limit mode -> FF L2 for security only

And I forgot to mention one thing because I haven't received this equipment yet...
As for the hardware clipper, I've ordered the last part of my gear : an Elysia Xmax.
This Mid Side Multiband Compressor will be the last piece of equipment in my setup.
It contains a clipper derived from the Elysia Alpha Compressor! <3
I'm still figuring out how I'm going to integrate the XMax into my chain, where I'm going to put it, but I'm certain it will be the perfect complement for my setup.

The SSL Fusion is very sexy, and I gave it a lot of thought when I bought my gear. It was a major factor in my decision!
I choose Wes Audio over Fusion because Wes equipment is recallable, best of hardware and software!

I'll try the Acustica Snow MB a little later!!!
Acustica Audio has been on my wishlist for a long time but I haven't taken the time to test it yet.

If you’re trying other digital limiters, DMG Limitless will probably be the one that stops the search if what you want is transparent loudness. Elevate isn’t really the same thing, it’s more of an adaptive transient and loudness tool than a straight “clean limiter” replacement, but I’d still put it on the to-test list. Pro-L2 is definitely faster to work with than Limitless, no question. From the gear you are chaining, it doesn't sound like a race anyway.

having a software clipper after all of the outboard can definitely be valid. It all depends. Whats happening on the external gear, what genre, references etc.

I see you guys are getting very technical over here, I'm learning a lot.

This was my mastering chain before today:
