Why is it so fun to collect presets?

love that about ezkeys and loopcloud. I like the feature of applying performance from another midi file to another midi file.

I just noticed out of the years of making presets and collecting some sounds get lost in the sauce. So I wanted to make something to help while in the flow state.

yeah that’s the goal. Making it for me but wanted to share with the community for free of course. Will push to GitHub too if anyone wants to build on it.

I like to hoard as many presets as possible.
    - but the caveat is - as long as they appeal to my taste; which means - lots of auditioning *_*

My reason is that new / different sounds can spawn inspiration for new idea creations.

It has a Fun side + DARK Side

Fun Side = Some presets just click ! They fit your track perfectly with some tweaks

Dark Side = You spend more of the time auditioning and miss out on the "learning sound design process" in the long run which is lethal.
One more downside is that you will never have a "Sound signature" if you keep changing lead/bass sounds very often

because i hate to create new sounds. it's a time-killer. i want to make a song not a sound. we have enough sounds today. i only use presets now.

plugins like nexus 5 got like 30.000 presets thats is insane and avenger 2 too. if you have that many presets... its just crazy. nothing wrong but yes there is alot of synths out there with presets and most of the time you do not use ALL the presets. i think it is our nature to always want more

Have days when I go through presets, play them and that mostly spark something, but I'm in no way collecting them and really keep them at low count, try to memorize them, sort the favorites, rarely add new ones too, just stick to few sound designers and few synths, even do my own "best of" bank categories so I don't have to waste time looking for sounds when inspiration hits. Been using same stuff for years, sometimes adding new sound bank feels like adding new synth, more then often that is enough of a change to spark something new.

Nexus 5 is over 40k by now, but it's not a good comparison with most other synths because of its design. Everything on the left column is perfectly organized by expansion, and then when you go into an expansion the presets are so organized on the right side. Plus, the automatic preview feature makes going through presets to find what you want so fast. Serum2's preset system is either almost as good, or better, now that the browser scan was fixed to be so much faster. Depending on your preferences.

When the synth works how they do, there is almost zero downside to having a crazy amount of presets. They just take up extra hard disk space. If you can't find something close to what you want quickly, and instead listen to a ton of previews trying to find the perfect thing, that is not a "too many presets" problem. Most people who make claims about sound design from scratch seem to think that something they make is going to be inherently better than something made by someone who creates and sells preset packs. Good luck with that, it's a time sink in the middle of producing a track.
