Lost Synapse - Laura (Synth Plugin) $69

Laura by Lost Synapse is a Virtual Instrument and a Virtual Effect Audio Plugin for macOS and Windows. It functions as an Audio Units Plugin and a VST 3 Plugin.

Laura runs four oscillator engines under a single signal path: a full wavetable engine with a built-in editor (formula box, brushes, per-frame operators, up to 256 frames), classic analog-style oscillators (saw, square, triangle, sine, pulse), two-operator FM, and a set of fractal kernels (Mandelbrot, Julia, Burning Ship, Tricorn, Multibrot, Newton). The fractal kernels are the headline. Their complex-plane coordinate is exposed as a parameter, so modulating it navigates a parameterized space of harmonic content rather than scrubbing between pre-baked frames. Park on a coordinate, attach an LFO to it, and you get slow timbral drift that is hard to reproduce by other means.

Around the oscillators sits a modulation matrix with six envelopes, four LFOs with editable shapes, and a macro layer that combines sources before they reach a destination. Every modulator slot can flip into a multi-segment user-drawn curve via the built-in MSEG editor, with per-segment tension, loop and sustain markers at any float position, tempo-synced rates from 1/32 to four bars, and a gallery of shape templates.

Filter+ is the signature filter section. It hosts Synapse, a 4-pole signature low-pass with always-on warmth, drive-mode-shaped resonance, and a built-in Sing wave-folder that turns the resonance peak into a harmonic, almost vocal bloom. It also offers the usual SVF-based types, ten pre-filter drive characters (Tube, Tape, Diode, Fold, Soft, Hard, Aurora, Mirage, Halo, Tanh), a series high-pass, a live response curve, and conditional dimming on controls that have no effect at the current settings.
The 16-slot FX rack covers chorus, delay, distortion, phaser, flanger, reverb (algorithmic and convolution with user IRs), EQ, granular cloud, spectral freeze, frequency shifter, a resonance network, and a multi-band splitter for routing individual bands through downstream effects. DICE buttons across the synth roll genuinely fresh sounds when inspiration is late.

Licensing is offline, with no telemetry and no cloud server.
A 30-minute-per-session demo runs on any machine without an account.

no audio or video demo is definitely weird but hey, at least it has a trial

How odd. I can't think of any good reason to keep prospective buyers from actually hearing how a synth sounds and to see it in action on a website that's trying to sell it. What's the upside?

Possible reasons include: The manufacturer has just finished programming "Laura's" and wants to start generating revenue immediately, planning to provide videos and sound samples at a later date. It is likely a one-man operation—making it more of a time-constraint issue. The DLL file is dated May 13, 2026.

Two skins for Laura are attached! I installed and tested the demo—it's a synth with potential.

I rather have a trial version than audio demos or a video.

the fractal kernel (mathematical incorrect! unless you do a Fourier transform from fractal parts to fractal sections, then you get a kernel, just like you do with normal functions, which you apply the FT to)

So would be nice, if one could give a deepr review of the synth?

    About

    Hi, I'm Ionut.
Lost Synapse is a one-person studio. Laura is the synth I wanted to use, so I built it.

    How this started
I started making music in 2016 and went through a small library of synths. They all worked. None of them combined the blocks the way I would assemble them by hand, and the fractal oscillator I kept wanting didn't exist in any of them. So I started writing my own.

If you want a feel for the kind of music that drives these decisions, my tracks are on YouTube @lostsynapse.

Laura is the result: wavetable, FM, classic analog, and fractal oscillators under one signal path, with a modulation matrix that gets out of the way and an FX rack that doesn't ask for ten plugins to finish a patch. The fractal engines (Mandelbrot, Julia, Burning Ship, Tricorn, Multibrot, Newton) are the unusual part. The complex-plane coordinate is a parameter, so modulating it navigates a parameterized space of harmonic content instead of scrubbing between pre-baked wavetable frames. Park on a coordinate, put an LFO on it, and you get a class of slow timbral drift that's hard to reproduce by other means.

    My background
I'm a senior software engineer by day, mostly backend, with about a decade of C++, Ruby on Rails, Python, and Node.js under my belt. The DSP, the plugin host integration, the licensing infrastructure, the website you're reading, the manual, the release pipeline. All of it is built by one person on weekends and evenings. That's the upside of being a studio of one: every decision is consistent, and you're never one acquisition away from the product going stale.

It's also the reason Laura's licensing is offline and the activation never phones home. I don't want to depend on a server staying up, and I don't think you should either.

    What's next
Laura is under active development, with a long roadmap of new FX modules, preset packs, and DSP refinements. Every build ships free for the life of your license, no extra charge. If you have a synth feature you've always wanted and never had, write to me. The studio is one person, so your email reaches the person who actually decides what gets built next.
