This is a kind of poll, questionnaire re. LITE versions of Windows, trimmed, optimised for DAW work and some gaming on the side.

I've been seeing 'Ghost' 10,11. Tiny ... etc.

Please advise suggestions for a slim version of Windows for DAW and everyday use ?

    Thanx ^_^

I honestly wouldn't waste too much time with that. If you get the most recent Windows 11 and use a reliable bloat-stripper app, you should be good to go.

There's a few on here giving outdated advice like messing with prioritizing resources for "background services", etc., or copy pasting AI slop responses. I would ignore all of that.

I'm a full-time producer and I have wasted a lot of time tinkering with Windows settings. Aside from the basics, you'll gain nothing by over-tweaking your setup. Many of the guides might end up messing with important features or are focused on gaming, not music work.

all those lite builds have problems with updates and dependencies of features removed,
save yourself trouble and waste of time troubleshooting things,
just use regular Windows Pro, maybe one feature cycle behind (for ex. 24H2 instead of 25H2),

if you have decent PC specs, you won't see noticeable performance improvements anyway,
if you're concerned about telemetry and spying, get something like NetLimiter and block network for any suspicious process you want,
also you can manually pause Windows Updates using simple registry entries,
O&O ShutUp is also fine, because it only disables things, not remove them, so doesn't break future updates

yes exactly, I also stopped tinkering and using stripped win install a while ago.
The best option is definitely a regular windows pro, with dual boot if you want to make music / play games&work...either using two SSD or partitioning one with dual boot and hiding whatever partitions you don't use.

You can keep a small partition in common if you want to quickly share files between the two systems.

Tinkering leads to poor results/performance and unintended consequences most of the time.
Basically you just need a few simple optimizations, chiefly keeping all your cores unparked (use parkcontrol) and your USB ports powered onat all times...and that's pretty much it tbh! optional: process lasso to boost windows audio process/control memory access/restrict CPU access.

The 'IoT' aimed version of windows 11 is just about the lightest version of 11 around, and you don't need to bother with dodgy 3rd parties, other than bypassing the MS download requirements to get the ISO direct from MS.

It hasn't been updated to 25H2 yet though, so it's still stuck on 24H2 features, which tbh isn't a totally bad thing - some of the 25H2 changes are considered bad changes.

I do not advise on using strip down versions other than the one that MS stripped down themselves: The LTSC version.
There you add classic shell or start is back, an Windows update blocker (WUB works great) and have the defender uninstall script from GitHub run. Then you turn of that execution / data memory security thing (forgot where it is, that takes some performance) and you're good to go. You do not gain any performance by not having a 30mb component on your c drive that might potentially be important to some exotic plugin the guy that made the lite version didn't think of.
Running light versions is like buying expensive oxygen free loudspeaker cables: It is a religious act that won't do you any good, best outcome: it won't do any bad.
(PS: I would not talk like this if I hadn't gone the light ISO road myself in the past)

Be a little more cautious with these so-called "tuning tools"; they mostly just line the manufacturers' pockets and introduce errors—leaving you with DAW and internet problems that you simply won't be able to resolve, because you won't know where the fault lies. So, this obsession with "slimming down" your system has its downsides, too.

So what's the general consensus on e.g. Ghost Spectre 11?

I’m a Windows 11 user, and everything runs smoothly; I’ve blocked updates and deleted Defender.

If I were offered 12 million euros, I’d upgrade to Windows 12.

I had too much troubles with "stripped down" versions.
Not in the early days with XP, but with 7 and 10.

Sometimes, i REALLY needed some additional services not installed and hard to install with MS update. Even not possible in auto mode.
And worse : LTSC needed to be updated ... but it was not possible because LTSC channel can't be updated.
I needed to change windows channel to Entreprise, and it was not easy and a possible source of troubles later.

I've used revi os to debloat win 11 on my laptop very happy with it super easy to setup on a fresh install of win and all the options I needed were easy to choose highly recommended from my experience all invasive features are gone updates can be switched off completely but if you do update revision os maintains your setup and in my experience has never re bloated after an update

I enjoyed how smooth it is out of the box, and lightweight, but I wouldn't use it as my daily OS, too many things didn't work suddenly and also broke in the long run, last but not least relying on Ghostspectre Windows updates was another inconvenience

The only two images I have used of the latter year winOS (win10) is the Win10 22H2 LTSC version and GS Win10 22H2 SuperLite. Both require more post build optimization, but the Superlite has more of the work done than the OEM LTSC. Admittedly if you're set in your mind to use a OEM image (win10 or 11) then the LTSC version is the one to use as it is much easier to deal with than the standard "pro" images.

The "de-bloat" scripts can get you approaching the finish line with post build optimization but most of those scripts use standard toggles for a lot of things (like the updaters). If you still allow the autonomous updating to occur IN ANY FORM all those optimizations will promptly be REVERSED by the next update/telemetry exchange. MS Office clicktorun is phoning home every single day, multiple times. The OS updater is exchanging telemetry on a daily basis as well. If one is dumb enough to hook the OS up to a ms account the sky is the limit with regard to telemetry and backdoor information exchange.

A word on autonomous ms updating - just say NO. Unless you're one who fancy's allowing the ugly corporate microsoft snout to peer up your ass every day and change all your shit around from under you, and more than likely render your OS unusable at some point - COMPLETELY DISABLE ALL AUTONOMOUS MS OS/OFFICE/CLICKTORUN/EDGE UPDATERS. There are still folks out there who really do not have a clue as to what exactly is exchanged on a @ day basis by leaving all that shit running. They refuse to believe ms would do anything to harm or hinder them. Big mistake.

Personally I do not run win11 on any of my boxen. I found it too obtuse and incompatible with legacy ware that I have carried over to win10 and have been running since win7. Other than that, Win10 has proven very reliable once it is completely removed from the auspices of the OEM...
