i use 5% of the software i download and 0,5% of the samples i download. alltogether i probably use less stuff that what i have paid for.

and i probabyl created more samples and recordings than used some by others.

samples were interesting until around 2003. after that, most sample libraries are newer versions of older sample libraries and that kind of stuff p*sses me on. also, i am not really a kontakt user.

all i am interested for since 20 years is rare and strange acoustic instruments, especially treated instruments like prepared piano or glass bowls, alphorn or rubber rings - or things recorded in a unusual way - and single "one shot" percussive samples.

my last own recording was thousands of hits on plastic trash cans in the stairwell of a high rise. recorded in various mic positions and then made aural filtered sets of them on the computer.

custom stuff has that "story" coming with it, which makes it a great source of inspiration.

In the beginning, the hard drive was empty. [In the beginning, the world was empty.]
In the middle of life, there was a huge selection of samples. [The world was filling up.]
Today, I don't need any new samples anymore. [Today, the world is full.]

In the beginning, there were live drummers. Drum machines eventually came along, but were rejected by most genres of "bands", and they remained primarily the domain of hiphop producers, experimental music, and synth-pop style "bands". Some industrial music bands kind of sprang from synth-pop, got edgier and incorporated drum machines and some samplers. A guy named Steve Albini is often credited with breaking that traditional " punk/rock band" approach because he and his band (Big Black) did not want to pay for a drummer, and probably hauling the drums gear around on a tour. For some of the "music establishment," they were shocked or disapproved of that approach, however quietly. Drummers who could not adapt to playing with a click track became dinosaurs. Industrial music bands continued to push the envelope using drum machines and samplers. Hiphop and dance music producers continued using their samples for music loops and most of their drums. Etc.

Fast forward to the recent era today, with lots of analog-centric pushback in rock bands. The importance of real drummers, analog-only synths, no samples or digital instruments, has become prevalent in most "band-centric" genres. The outward reaction to AI has helped this to accelerate. The only problem is that many listeners making such lofty claims about traditional recordings, do not realize how often they are listening to "live drums" with lots of work done using tools like UVI Drum Replacer, SPL Drum Exchanger, or just outright Superior Drummer libraries. If using samplers live is good enough for Danny Carey, but not an unheard of bands drummer; it may be time to rethink some of the obvious inferiority complex talk.

Make your own, or use something like Synplant to create an approximate clone of a sound you like. Save your hard drive space.

    Never got into sampling.
Make my own sounds and noises:woot:and call it music.
    Makes me sound different.
    Because I am different.
    Different is good.
    Same is dull.

Yes we are always searching for samples. I am always searching for oldskool samples and sample cds, old audio, akai, e-mu etc stuff, any kind. But I guess at this point I have most of them already but I am still wishing I unearth some new ones. I mean "new" old ones.
