As the title says. I'd like to source just the raw sound of various hardware synths. Unprocessed audio from machines like the 303, moogs, prophets etc. Any tips?

@PulseWave those links where exactly what I was looking for... but they're all dead.

that is unfortunately something that analog synths simply do not have. :)

Yeah, in an ideal world I'd get wav files at least a few seconds long but seems not to exist.

that'd just be a loop of what's there. analog synths have variations/detuning/etc but not at the level of the waves of single oscillators

I know! I've owned a prophet 12 and moog voyager. I was silly enough to have sampled neither before selling them.

Those are wavetables. I read your question as being about single-cycle waveforms, since that’s the closest thing to “raw oscillator samples” in synthesis terms.

Wavetables are a higher-level format, so it’s a slightly different category.

If you’re looking for wavetable content, there are lots of good packs out there, including ones that come with Serum presets. There are also some good tools for creating them, like Sonic Academy Node or Ocean Swift’s own Wavetable Creator. You can also “flatten” wavetables by extracting individual frames and using them as single-cycle waveforms in Serum or Phase Plant, etc. That’s a common workflow for building custom oscillator libraries.

Is a sense, yes, but unlike wavetables those aren't chopped into frames. I'm hoping to use this is hardware sampler in the same way a free running oscillator is available in a hardware synth.

Here's another suggestion: you could also use software synthesizers like GForce - Minimonsta2 VST3 and GForce - Axxess VST3, for example, and set an INIT preset—that is, a preset that's at zero, with no filters, etc.—and then record a WAV sample of 3 seconds or more, which you can then play back in your hardware sampler! You can then create several basic Pure sounds, as shown in the attached image.

Then you’re basically describing single cycle waveforms.

When you said “use this in a hardware sampler in the same way a free running oscillator is available in a hardware synth,” that implies no scanning or frame morphing, just a stable waveform looping continuously.

That’s essentially a periodic waveform represented as a single cycle and repeated, which is how you approximate an oscillator in a sampler.

What hardware sampler are you using?

On something like an E-MU Ultra Sampler, any kind of movement isn’t coming from the oscillator itself. It’s static. It comes from things like the Z plane filters, which can morph the sound over time. Cords page fun :)

Serum 2 is useful for this too. Once you get something into the wavetable editor, there’s an export option that lets you extract individual frames from the waveform. Or you can just load the wav file into its sampler oscillator and be done with it.

Here’s an example of what you end up with that way from my Slim Phatty. It was sampled keymapped using Logic Autosampler, I picked a key, imported into Serum 2, and then split into wavetable frames (single cycle waveforms):

    I'm on the Isla S2400.

Unfortunately that link you posted has no file behind it.

I guess I (perhaps naively) feel that a raw oscillator file has more life to it. It's not perfectly repetitive. Definitely I find a lot of VSTs sound flat and lifeless compared to the hardware equivalents. But I do realise this mission of mine is only gonna get me a 2 percent difference.

it's 247 wav files created from the wavetable editor feature in Serum2. It is an example of what it spits out as single cycle waveforms if you export them that way from a wavetable. You have to actually visit the page for files on Workupload.

Yeah that Isla sampler is a different animal. It's not really meant to be a synth instrument building sampler. This is obvious E-Mu Ultra sampler territory for me. It's like building synth patches, not just playback anymore.
