imho the only reasoned testing enviroment is the app in which you are going to use the stuff. the host is what makes the most difference, isnt it?

No, it's not. I have encountered numerous Mac releases which Logic will not load correctly as AU files, and then after trying them that way I have loaded them into Patchwork, after loading then into Patchwork will load successfully in Logic with nothing else done to them.
Zynaptiq Morph 3 Pro is one example which did this.

You are still talking about testing plugins after they load inside a DAW. I'm talking about testing k'd or patched releases, some of which have been tested only on the MacOS versions and DAW versions that the releaser has available to them. Many no longer have Intel machines with Catalina kicking around and are just nice enough to try providing Intel versions still. Also, if I have an active Logic session I am working in, I'm not closing and reopening my DAW just to try a release. Patchwork allows you to not waste your time closing your DAW and reopening it just to find out a release isn't going to fly. The first step to auditioning a plugin is to load it successfully in the DAW. Instead of simply having an alternate host to use, which may also allow you to load multiple formats, you are stuck at "It doesn't work".

Yes, Reaper seems a good choice too.

First, it is possible to make a portable install for testing purposes only which can be completely independent from an instance installed in the system folders. Then create a link to an executable. It is even possible to create two (or more) portable installations

Second, it is possible to delete completely system locations of plugins and assign custom ones. It is useful to keep a number of plugins small and avoid long search for installed plugins.
