It was just about clipping, if I remember correctly, back in the 90s.
Get a good 909 BD.
Bring GAIN up to the max on the channel, just play with that when you have the distortion kickdrum you want.
Then, bounce it to audio sample.
There you have it. You can add some reverb, as well.
Here an example. It's just playing with dark reverb, tune, decay of the kick...

Hardcore master seems like a good plugin for only 15

 

My only complaint is that it only has the two distortion profiles, but they both sound good. Its nice having that much control over the effect without having to split frequencies and you can hold right click and move the EQ section around like a filter which is much easier than automating individual EQ peaks for kick FX. He has a bunch of free kick packs also that I like to use to build fills when I want something a little more mangled than VipZone stuff.
