I have a PC that's used for gaming, and it's pretty powerful and wondering if anyone uses their PC/laptop for both gaming and music production with stuff from R2R/sister site also installed? Any negative effects on the gaming aspects?

A good gaming PC will generally make a very good performing DAW PC, the only drawback might be fan noise if its an open case but otherwise you should be good with the addition of an audio interface. There won't really be any negatives expect for disk space but you could always buy another Nvme for your games! Just don't run games while your in your DAW of choice :D

Why would there be any negative aspects? A gaming PC is a PC just like any other PC.

And in case you wonder, I have also a gaming chair - still no issues.

The only downside for me is noise, some drivers disabled for better latency, as bluetooth, wireless and extra consumptiom by using maximum performance (100% cpu, no idle, etc, typical config for better latency). If into uad ecosystem for me windows was very buggy, if not its just perfect. Audient and rme have excelent windows drivers

DPC Lagency Check is a good benchmark.
= internal delays between processes, hardware etc.

My production PC is my gaming PC which is also my programming PC. It has way too much shit installed and everything joined hands to live in harmony. I fail to understand why so many people are afraid of letting a computer do its work.

It depends: are you a casual or a competitive gamer?
If you are a casual then there is nothing to worry about, you can install anything on your PC, sometimes you will have to prioritize your Music Production environment but as a casual gamer there are almost no compromises.
However, if you want your PC to be very competitive and want the lowest latencies possible, then you will have to sacrifice many things related to any other task. I would say that if you really want to make sure the PC is fully optimized for gaming then you need a new computer only for that matter, because every new program, driver, device, OS settings, audio settings, network settings, etc. etc. will have an impact on latency and performance, we are talking about milliseconds here, but for real competitive gamers those differences are crucial for winning/losing.

I am both music producer and competitive gamer myself. Since my main activity comes from music production then everything in my PC is prioritized for that, but I also tried to configure my PC for competitive gaming as much as I could, and my latency readings are still behind pro players that have their own PCs build and configured only for gaming, so my next step is to buy a computer just for competitive gaming.
(My current PC is a Ryzen 9 7600, NVIDIA 3070 RTX, 32 of Ram, 3 Tb of NVME storage, Notcua Air coolers.)

High end graphic cards (NVidia RTX or AMD) may increase DPC Lagency for realtime audio.
You should check this first ...

Someone mentioned that network disconnections are occurring in connection with the new R2R system.

"This program seems to have the side effect of repeatedly turning the internet connection on and off. If that’s not the case, please let me know."

Since I’ve also been experiencing disconnections for a few weeks now and getting kicked out of the (online) game as a result, I’m currently checking to see if there’s a connection.

No. For context, my PC has a 9950X3D CPU, 96GB DDR5 RAM @ 6000MHz and an RTX 5090 GPU. It's used for gaming primarily as I no longer make that much music nowadays, but also want to make some music for myself. Therefore, I was contemplating installing Cubase, Ableton and the plugins I use on the PC too.

When talking about issues, I'm not talking about hardware issues of limitations, but rather whether the R2R stuff introduces any gremlins that then destabilise the gaming experience, as I use VR and the gaming experience can already be sensitive to any quirks

Hi @Bunford, I've been wondering for years how Windows and the installed software can coexist peacefully and without any issues. I would see the danger coming from a different direction, namely Microsoft updates. MIDI 2.0 updates have already caused problems on some user systems; some of what Microsoft presents is neither sufficiently tested nor mature.

Perhaps you should consider a temporary halt to updates. For me, R2R and other Teams have never caused any system errors. Make complete backups of your C:/ drive so that you can restore your system in case of infections or malfunctions, etc. I once experienced timeouts after a Microsoft update, so I unplugged my internet modem and went online with a different system. Eventually, the problem was resolved, but my blood pressure went through the roof!

It's really the legit software that introduces all manner of updaters and authenticators, some of which can add to your system's background load slightly. Usually not that bad but still something to be aware of. K'd releases do away with those so they're cleaner that way.

I've used pirated software on gaming systems with no negative effects, but YMMV as always.

If you want to make sure, you can overcome all possible trouble by using 2 versions of windows on the same pc, one for gaming, one for music production.

This has the side effect of using more disk space, of course. But on the other hand every win installation has it's own prios.

(i even use 3, another one for graphics & video editing).

Too much additional software installations on one single windows installation tends to create a more open field for troubles.
