Álvaro Leon Cassuto (born November 17, 1938 in Porto, Portugal; died April 6, 2026 in Guincho near Cascais, Portugal) was a Portuguese conductor and composer.

He was the most important conductor in Portugal in the 20th century and the most internationally renowned conductor of his country.

    Life

Álvaro Cassuto came from an ancient Sephardic Jewish aristocracy that fled Portugal during the Renaissance and settled in Hamburg. His grandparents, his father Alfonso Cassuto, and his mother were forced to flee from German persecution of Jews in the 1930s, so unlike his father, Álvaro is Portuguese, not German.

Even as a teenager and young adult, he was initially drawn to composition and, along with Emmanuel Nunes, was one of the most important representatives of twelve-tone music in Portugal, though he never achieved Nunes's significance or renown in this field. He studied orchestral conducting with Pedro de Freitas Branco in Lisbon, the brother of Luís de Freitas Branco, in Hilversum, and with Herbert von Karajan in Berlin.

He earned a Kapellmeister diploma in Vienna and also passed his state law examination. He was also a student of Fernando Lopes-Graça, a prominent Portuguese composer. This was followed by an unprecedented career for a Portuguese conductor and orchestra leader around the world. He spent 20 years conducting and leading orchestras in the United States alone. His most famous performances as a conductor, reviewed by the New York Times, were at Carnegie Hall from 1982 to 1986.

He also conducted and led orchestras in Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Boston, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, among other cities. Álvaro Cassuto died on April 6, 2026, at the age of 87 at his home in Guincho (near Cascais).

    Musical Career

He recorded over 50 albums as a conductor and was also under contract with the renowned record label Naxos. Among the most famous Portuguese composers he recorded were João Domingos Bomtempo, Joly Braga Santos, Luís de Freitas-Branco, Fernando Lopes Graça, and Marcos Portugal. His recordings of non-Portuguese composers included Mozart, Beethoven, Alberto Ginastera, Joseph Haydn, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

He was instrumental in establishing the modern orchestral system in Portugal. He founded the Nova Symphonia Portuguesa, the Orquestra do Algarve in Porto, and the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, thus making a significant contribution to the development of classical music in Portugal. From 1980 to 1981, he was also the artistic director of the São Carlos Opera in Lisbon, one of the world's most prestigious opera houses.

He was instrumental in establishing the modern orchestral system in Portugal. As a guest conductor, he also led major orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Orchestras he led for many years included the University of California Orchestra (1974–1979), the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra (1979–1985), the National Orchestra of New York City (1981–1986), the Nova Filarmónica Portuguesa (1988–1993), the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra (1993–1999), and the Orquestra do Algarve (2002–2005).

In Germany, he became known for his connections to the Sephardic community in Hamburg and as conductor of the Berlin and Leipzig Radio Orchestras. He also conducted in Jerusalem, Brussels, Milan, St. Petersburg, and Moscow.

My condolences for a true citizen of the world, a fighter for a form of culture that, unfortunately, has been relegated in terms of recognition, almost as a mere pillar of mass media (a cultural medium in itself, it remains today more restricted to the niche of ‘admirers of classical music’).
I extend my sincere condolences and also my gratitude for all the work and the creations accomplished throughout a life dedicated to good music. RIP Álvaro Leon Cassuto!
