Sennheiser to be sold: Sonova plans to divest the audio brand - March 23, 2026

In a press release outlining its future strategy, Sonova almost casually mentions a major development: the divestment of its consumer hearing division, and thus of Sennheiser. In 2021, Sonova acquired the consumer audio division of Sennheiser Electronic GmbH for €200 million. However, the audio specialists apparently never quite fit in with the parent company.

Sonova states matter-of-factly that it intends to focus on hearing aids and cochlear implants. It will consistently allocate its resources accordingly. According to the official Sonova press release, distribution channels, demand dynamics, and development cycles in the consumer audio market differ too significantly from those of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Therefore, starting with the 2025/26 financial year, the audio division will be listed as a business unit designated for sale.

Sonova states matter-of-factly that it intends to concentrate on hearing aids and cochlear implants. Sonova aims to achieve sales of 6 billion Swiss francs by fiscal year 2030/31. The demand for hearing aids is steadily increasing, particularly in Germany, due to demographic trends. At the same time, the market penetration of hearing solutions remains low. This presents an opportunity for the company.

Back in 2021, many market observers were surprised by Sonova's acquisition of Sennheiser's consumer business. Perhaps they were following the example of the Danish manufacturer GN, which also sells hearing aids and is active in the headphone and headset market with its Jabra and SteelSeries brands. However, the plan appears to have failed. A new owner is now being sought for Sennheiser's consumer division.

I call it karma for selling headphones with disposable pads that last a year and then straight to the landfill to contribute to pollution. I used to love them back in the day, these days they're charging premium for the bare minimum.

Great news for people with hearing deficiencies and the elderly. Bad news for the Audio communities worldwide.
and of course, A.I advancement has nothing to do with it.

I've been using Sennheiser DT 1770 Pro headphones to track and going deaf so was contemplating getting a pair of Phonak Virto Infinio
hearing aids to compensate for that loss. My one stop shopping with Sonova has been thwarted. Damn, Sonovo, I'll have to look elsewhere.

I like the part where I basically cannot get replacement pads and cables for my Sennheiser HD 380 Pro anymore, and haven't been able to for like 2 years. This is why I'm just gonna default to buying DT 770s or Audio Technica ATH M50X in the future. Even if they're not the best of the best, at least you'll (probably) always be able to buy replacement parts.

The Sennheiser "HD 380" is no longer available, according to the manufacturer's website. I once had a Sennheiser HD something-or-other where the cable broke, so I got a new cable from a manufacturer in China.

    Take a look here:

You can also solder a cable for the HD 380 Pro yourself or have one soldered for you. When buying new headphones, you should order several replacement cables and ear pads at the same time.

Cables for the Sennheiser HD 380 Pro are completely sold out!
