Soooo overrated. Imagine them without that stupid costume - it wouldn't be interesting at all. Nothing original for me, someone who grew up on bands like Mr. Bungle (who, by the way, managed to be weird while also being actually fun and musical). And if I’m in the mood for odd meters, I’d rather listen to Haken — it’s more complex and still manages to sound like music.

Yes, yes, I know… it’s microtonal. Great. To me it still mostly sounds like an out-of-tune guitar. If you want to hear a band that actually does interesting things with microtonal ideas and Eastern-influenced modes, try Ozric Tentacles.

Gimmicks of all kind aside, I yay them compared to the slop (AI or not) that festers around these days. They play real instruments and sound tight like sh*t!

i am following them since they appeared. great music, great artist, great overall concept.

if you wonder why they play so tight; they make music together since decades.

'It's not even half as interesting as MY favorite weird band that I grew up listening to, which is SO MUCH BETTER because the 90s were SO MUCH BETTER and my generation DESTROYS THESE UNORIGINAL KIDS. Haha, I've listened to a weird band 40 years ago, THIS IS NOTHING.'

It's giving me these vibes man.

"Fabienk" is a really good song imo. Their most recent release too, I think. So they're improving if u ask me.

My first impression was they are appropriating Selknam dress and that is cringe. I am also wary of anything that is seemingly being pushed on me from all angles and algorithms. I’ve seen a million bands in thousands of clubs and basements as a touring musician and active part of a music scene for 2 decades. This band is fine but they aren’t anything special.

Edit: But that’s just my opinion.

Someone should make a mashup of Yoko Ono singing with them, in microtones of course.

Here we come back to that question of how important it is to be original and/or how little that can actually mean, because in the end it all depends on individual taste, or how much do you enjoy experimental math rock, with microtonality and layers of loops?

Personally, I do find this kind of sound interesting, but it feels more like an intellectual exercise/mental training, and I can only dedicate myself to it for about 15 minutes at most. In other words, it’s not something I would invest my time or money in, since I find it very niche.

So, the problem isn’t the music itself... it’s when some self-proclaimed genius tells you: "—You just don’t get their sound 'cos you’re cognitively deficient (aka dumb, etc, just like fTRoLLster boy loves to do…), because apparently enjoying math rock may require a PhD in pretentiousness. That’s the kind of "unique conceptuality" that turns taste into some phony intellectual hierarchy.

Still, I believe it’s important that this type of music exists (despite the rather aggressive marketing campaign trying to push the duo as the new global phenomenon :dont:‼️), and that there should be room for every kind of music!

A.P. is the answer to all those idiots who think that a) you can get only famous by investing one million dollar into traditional promotion or b) that AI will replace artists.

Idk why people are calling it math rock, it sounds much more like a fusion between tishoumaren, azerbaijani gitara and rock than effectively math rock. At least as someone whos very much into those types of music and math rock, it doesn't make much sense.

Since I don’t fit into any of those categories you mentioned (neither a marketing millionaire nor an AI prophet), I think it’s cool that, for you, A.P. is ‘the ultimate answer’, but everyone has their own dose of excitement. I’m just sharing my perception of the sound and the way it’s being promoted. Personally, I prefer to keep my feet on the ground and my ears open: music doesn’t need a salvation label, it just needs space to exist.

Math Rock = a style of progressive indie/alternative rock characterized by complex, atypical rhythmic structures, odd time signatures, and angular melodies. I am sticking to a conceptual definition.

Bingo. "Originality" is frequently the only tool wielded by those making no impact otherwise. Junk is no better if it is "weird junk".

Even if you stick to conceptual definitions, wouldn't that also apply to prog rock, metal and a bunch of other stuff? It's a really vague term, like, wtf is an 'angular melody' haha
