    Emulation of Virus, JP-8000, DX7, Micro Q & more March 11, 2026

discoDSP Retromulator emulates several VA synthesizers based on the Motorola DSP 56300 processor and other chips. Sounds great, but there's a catch: you need the ROM firmware of the originals for the emulations to run.

discoDSP Retromulator for DSP 56300 synthesizer
Retromulator is based on the open-source project Gearmulator by the development team dsp56300 (The Usual Suspects). The plug-in emulates the aforementioned Motorola processor, which was used by various VA synthesizers, all of which are now at least 20 years old.

Retromulator merely provides the platform. The actual synthesizers can only be made to run using the original firmware. According to the developers, this firmware should be loaded from your own hardware device. For some models, discoDSP states that this is possible through automatic assembly of dump files. So, you really need to know what you're doing.

Unlike Gearmulator, Retromulator doesn't have a GUI that emulates the synthesizer. It can only play back the sound banks and presets. A proper interface might be added later via an update.

Currently, the following synthesizers can be emulated with Retromulator: Access Virus A, B, and C, as well as the Virus TI model , Clavia Nord Lead 2X , Roland JP-8000 , Waldorf Micro Q , and Microwave XT .
With the emulation of the YM21290 and YM21280 chips and the HD6303R subprocessor, the Yamaha DX7 is also available.

With the recent update 1.1, an emulation of the Akai S1000 is now available. This sampler can be used with the SFZ and SF2 formats, as well as discoDSP's own ZBP and ZPP formats. The sampler has full MIDI CC support and does not require ROM firmware.

discoDSP Retromulator is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats, as well as a standalone version (Windows, macOS, and Linux). The plug-in is free to use. To support further development and receive priority technical support, a license can be purchased for €29.99.
