from my experience youtube and tiktok give you some impressions to at least get a chance to be heard by someone

soundcloud not at all, neither does spotify i think?

 

I saw the most random reach happen on TikTok with zero following — just used a trending sound and decent captions. I also tried to buy tiktok likes once to give a boost to a video that was kinda stuck with low views, and it did pick up a bit after that. I think early engagement helps the algorithm decide if it should show your video to more people.

Why not post your SoundCloud music here?

Why not burn your music to a CD-ROM and give it away to friends, acquaintances, and DJs?

 

YouTube is the most viable way. Instagram and Tikok are good platforms for marketing short, catchy, interesting clips that help people discover you. YouTube is where you'll make decent money if people are willing to watch the entire video and subscribe...and at no cost like the shady music streaming services.

I make enough money on YouTube to pay a few bills, and I'm not even trying at this point. I haven't posted a new video in 5 years, but people are still watching my old content which keeps me eligible for monetization.

Quality over Quantity.

you have a better chance finding a hipster with a tape deck you can give your mixtape to, than to find a dj that still runs his set from CD.
And depending on OPs age: None of his friends has a player if he is below Gen-x.

 

yeah the cdrom is too 20years ago. I still like to release my albums in cd format as well as vinyl but i know it's a strech. everybody's got some sort of music app scenario for streaming. it will be double luck for them to have a cd player. unless it's in the car. and car manufacturers are taking them out as well... so the cdrom thing.... quite a thing of the past even if you send the files in a usb.
cell phone companies have made it too complicated to have actual physical files in the phones and want you to rely on streaming... so yeah best case scenario would be to share a link not a cdrom. you can try and pay YT for promotion but it has poor reach

 

I burned some of my Sound Design radio plays onto CD-ROM and gave them to my friends and relatives. There are full-blown copyright violations in them, I can't put them online. It's a lasting gift because it's material and not just bits and bytes. The back has my name and table of contents, which I find much more personal. Why not? You reach additional listeners.

Many of us, myself included, still have a Blu-ray/DVD/CD player or a PC with a DVD/CD drive. I don't think your generalization that everyone has a music app is entirely accurate. I and my personal circle of friends have music apps and aren't on Spotify either. Perhaps you should also include the slightly older ones in your considerations and not make blanket judgments.

If I have someone sitting in front of me who's 18, I don't expect them to know a lot, but rather to be relatively inexperienced. Depending on their talent and previous education, you can support people very specifically. Of course, there are people whose music is very simple, suitable for the masses, and not particularly special; you can help them better if you know who you're dealing with. The digital world is different from the analog world.

 

Because it's hard to tell if you don't understand because your from a older generation or a younger generation and just write correctly.

Getting back on topic, I can only add the suggestion of local radio.

I had a similar situation and ran a quick check through a Social Catfish review before getting in too deep. It helped me catch a few red flags early and saved me from wasting time. It’s not perfect, but paired with a little gut instinct, it makes sorting real people from sketchy profiles way less stressful.

soundcloud used to be good in 2012... i had alot of views back then

i think maybe tiktok! instagram only big superstars get lots of views... try youtube too

 

2 on YouTube. You can create a whole lot of content besides your music which can be interesting to your audience (jam session vids, recording, talking about musical philosofies, other kinds of art). Of course content creation like regular YouTubers do isn't the goal here, the content shouldn't obfuscate your songs, instead it should give the listener the right vibe when listening to you. Plus, you're not restricted to any distribution service and streaming grabbing your money lowkey.

 

It's literally bits and bytes, man. How do you think CDs work ? They're just like really small hard drives that can keep around 700 mb of bits and bytes.
