This is about the Keeley Compressor Plus pedal. I have 5 pedals from different brands, 3 of them does the same, but I need the Keeley the most.

It suffers from terrible intermodulation. Becomes audible when you play intervals around frets 20-24. No matter what interval you play, you hear a 3rd phantom note appearing, sometimes being distorted. The note is always lower than the fundamentals of the interval.

Here is an example, I picked in a manner to exaggerate the problem:

I hear the phantom note in the example as 540Hz. This was later confirmed in Spectralayers, it is there exatcly at 540Hz:



Beating outruled. f1 - f2 = fbeat I am fretting A#5 E6, That is 1318Hz - 932Hz = 386Hz.
Very likely intermodulation instead: 2f2-f1 = 1864-1318 = 546 Hz (540Hz in my case due to the intonation of the guitar).

Any advice where the intermodulation happens? How to solve the problem? Input gain is OK, measured, the intermodulation happens even if the input signal is as low as 5mv Vpp.

You mean that rattling thing? Sounds to me like the guitar is picking up something else and the pedal is just making it more obvious.

Anyway, i don't know a whole lot about electronics, but i have a few questions that may help others pinpoint the issue:

-Is the "intermodulation" always at the same frequency?
-Have you tried a different guitar?
-Have you tried using a battery instead of a power supply (or vice versa), and does that affect the issue in any way?
-Is the pedal connected to something else (i.e. an amp or another pedal), or what is the chain in this example?

Even though you measured 5 mVpp and still hear it, try rolling off guitar volume to 6–8 or using a lower-output pickup for those high-fret parts. Many OTA compressors sound cleanest with signals kept deliberately small.

Add a clean boost or buffer in front with volume control

Of course it is a good idea, I will put the Carl MArtin Compressor and the Keeley next to each other. The Carl Martin doesn't do this thing, the Keeley does. I will be switching between the two back and forth.

IT is not easy to hear the phantom note. My ear perceived it as distortion for a long time, the interval notes being distorted, because on my guitar, the phantom note appears distorted. On the Schecter Omen, the phantom note is almost clean, at least in certain intervals.

Sometimes it appears as noise, or if someone hit a metal plate or would pluck a loose metal tongue on a kalimba. If I hadn't borrowed the Schecter, I would have never noticed it is actually a phantom note.

Yes and no. I have been struggling with this problem for years, about a year ago I decided to make an effort to find what causes the distortions I hear in compressors, because I need a clean compressed sound very much. Back then when the linked post was written, we thought that the cause of problems is clipping on the input. It revealed the humbuckers within reach for me almost always have signals that are stronger than the Vpp limit of the compressors (even guitars sold as quality ones). So last year I was building a circuit to tackle this problem without tone loss, and outside of guitars. I succeeded, the distortion was gone from most of the frets, but I noticed that at the 20-24th frets there are still problems, even when I am feeding the compressor with signals as weak as 5mVpp. It was then when I realized that there are two problems here, clipping that I was asking about last year (and which we thought is the only problem), and that was tackled, and this other problem the intermodulation, which was unknown to us up to this point. And in this post I am trying to figure out how to tweak the Keeley so that it won't do this, because during the time passed I realized that is the compressor where the settings and features fit my needs, except for the phantom notes.

 

Good for you if you live at a place where you can do it easily. Where I am I can't do it without loosing considerable amount of money on it.

 

Thanks to both of you! These are very useful information! Sadly I expected more optimistic responses for mods in connection with this, but well, if this is the situation this is the situation. Anyhow, I have received some tips already, I will keep on trying them to mod this because if it works this would be absolutely an award winning pedal, but definately not this way as it is now.

But I would point out one thing that seems to me a false direction, yet it shows up again and again: tweaking settings is not a working solution, or only between very tight limits. The problem is: you may get improvement, I already know it, but at the expense of loosing the advantages that the pedal offers. And then we are back to the good old problem that okay, I may use another pedal, but which one, because most other pedals have compressor artifacts.

Here is the link for the comparison. The guitar is Schecter Omen Extreme. Listen loudly on good quality stuff, not on something like laptop speakers, or portable USB speakers. Else you might not hear the problem.

However I have just made a new test where the problem is audible much better:

The test shows how volume adjustments before the compressor influence the sound. The interesting is that if you turn down the volume on the guitar, the intermodulation seems to be gone (in reality not, it just becomes very silent). But in case you want to avoid loosing trebles by turning the volume pot down on the guitar either by a treble bleed mod on the guitar or with an active pad after the guitar, the intermodulation is quite audible again, in spite of that the gain has been reduced to 30% before the compressors.

It wasn´t any kind of attack towards you or your situation, since you did not even state where you live or what´s policy of returning goods.
I still feel you, I once bought Danelectro delay, which was nothing that the seller said about it, but this was before internet got popular and no sound examples.

P.S. Is this something, that all Keeley´s pedal have? I am interested, since this is first time I hear about Keeley brand.
Also if it´s in under warranty, they state their site about free fix

 

Intermodulation is something you always have to expect in non-linear systems. It can be better or worse depending on the design of the pedal, amp, plugin etc, but it's always there.

The best solution I can think of is to try a really clean digital compressor. That usually means getting a multi-effect though. The only standalone digital compressor I can think of (that isn't trying to model some vintage analog comp) is the TC Electronic Hypergravity/Spectracomp (same pedal with different housings and knobs). I don't know exactly how audible the intermodulation is with it, but I'm pretty sure it's more or less inaudible compared to most analog compressor pedals that are built on old designs like the Ross Compressor and MXR DynaComp etc. You also get a huge amount of control over the transfer curve and envelope through the TonePrint Editor app, so you can really fine-tune the compression to the exact sound you want.

If you don't want to go digital, then I'm not sure what the cleanest comp pedal is. I guess you could try Chase Bliss Clean, but it's not certain that the pedal is as clean as the name would suggest.

 

There is no more shop warranty for it. The Keeley company may check it due to some general warranty, but that would cost quite much if the situations turns out the wrong way. The shipping back and forth is priecey if I want to send it with insurance, and when coming back the customs may charge a fee as much as 30% of the online average price. Theoretically I can claim it back but it requires paperwork before and after sending. And also who know what happens at the US border, whether Trump's 15% recent tax will be applied or not.

Moreover I don't think it is faulty, because I have a Gurus Optivalve, that I purchased new, and that has the same problems. Also the Demeter Compulator. There the problems may be a bit different though. And you see there is this situation that the Carl Martins work, that is FET, the Keeley is OTA, has problems, so well, it may be that I managed to buy 3 faulty pedals, but in the recent circumstance everything seems to support the idea that this is a circuit feature.

The Keeley is a good compressor anyway, but this intermodulation is a downside.

 

The most essential problem in my case is that I am not a pro engineer. I now certain things, know the settings and artifacts of compressors, but I cannot predict the exact behavior of all pedals. And on the other hand many pedals have odd features that you would absolutely not expect by the book. For example, the Carl Martin and the Gurus Optivalve I have, the settings on the Ratio knob can activate even if there is no signal over the threshold. Who would expect that. Such things complicate proper settings, sometimes multiple features share a common knob. So it is very difficult to find the ideal pedal and its ideal setting, takes quite a long time. That's why I am so dependant on the Keeley, because it is quite intelligent, has good "presets" implemented in it, that I couldn't achieve with other compressors. Well, that is possible a similar one exists, the question is which one?

The TC electronics interests me though. It lacks a feature that I need, but this toneprint stuff is interesting, and at this price I may still buy one, just to experiment with the tone print, because that feature is a great help to create the tone I need. But what is the format that the toneprint injects? Or it is a closed system of TC electronics and don't have outward compatibility? Like other software to create the tone, that someone creates for me, sends me and I load it?

By the way, if there was a similar pedal where you can load settings but also have a Tone knob, that would be the the best for me. Then it would have all the settings I need, plus the feature to finetune the settings from the computer.

 

Does the unwanted intermodulation always occur at 540Hz or does it wander from that depending on what you play? If the former, maybe you could place an EQ after the pedal and notch that freq out? I suspect it's the latter, though.

While that specific pedal is not modeled in the HX Stomp, seems like you should be able to find a comp that meets your needs with that? Even if that same intermodulation is modeled in their comps, you might be able to adjust for it in an EQ placed after the comp block.

This suggestion sounds like over-engineering a problem and maybe more money than you'd want to spend, but if you sell most of your comp pedals, it might come out as a wash if you could find a nicely priced used HX Stomp. It could solve your problem, though.
