    GPT: You want to bypass plugins so the set actually opens instead of choking. Good move.

    Here are the practical ways to do it in Ableton Live 12:

    Method 1 – Disable all plugins globally before opening the project (safest)

    1. Open Live (don’t load the project yet).

    2. Go to Settings → Plug-Ins.

    3. Turn off:
      • Use VST2 Plug-In System Folders

      • Use VST3 Plug-In System Folders

      • Use Audio Units (on Mac)
    4. Close Settings.

    5. Now open the project.
    Live will open the set with all third-party plugins marked as missing, but it won’t try to load them. This is the cleanest recovery method.

    After you fix whatever’s wrong, re-enable plugins in Settings and rescan.

    Method 2 – Temporarily move your plugin folders (more brute force)

    If Live crashes before you can even reach preferences:

    • Quit Live
    • Move your VST/VST3 folders somewhere else (e.g., to Desktop)
    • Launch Live and open the project

    Live won’t find the plugins, so it skips loading them.

    Then move the folders back later.

    Method 3 – Disable individual plugins after opening

    If it opens but is unstable:

    • Immediately disable tracks one by one
    • Or remove suspect plugins
    • Save a new version of the set

    Hard truth:
    There is no “safe mode open without plugins” button in Live like some DAWs have. You have to block plugin scanning or remove access to them.

    If this is happening often, that’s usually a sign one specific plugin is unstable. Don’t just keep working around it — identify the offender and either update it or retire it.

    Usually, Live cannot determine how much memory has already been used up. Even if you're not running other applications aside from Live, working with large files on the libraries can make you reach the limits and make the system crash.

    Try flattening the tracks that consumes the memory to free up some memory. You can do that by freezing the tracks first, then use the flatten command so that it will replace the original clips with the ones created by the freezing. Doing this will also automatically remove the devices and samples from the Set.

    Now, if a Set crashes while loading, you can restore it by opening an empty Live Set. On the Live's browser, type in <*.als file> then click the arrow on *als file to open the menu to display all the tracks. You can now import the track by drag and drop to the empty Live Set.

    Then, you can now freeze and flatten that track. You can also turn the RAM switch to Sample display off to save up memory and avoid crashes.
    Not enough memory on Ableton Live software does not mean there is no sufficient memory in your computer or drives. It means that memory available on the Ableton Live software to hold data or information has been filled up or application has run out of memory. In another word there is low virtual memory.

    So, you have to increase virtual memory. But first try to uninstall the application,save to another location and delete the program folder. Then re-boot and re-install the application again. If it does not work then it may be happen due to another reasons.

    The problem you faced, may be also due to Ableton Live software used much memory. So close all program including Ableton Live software and reopen Ableton Live software. It may solve your problem.

    That means Ableton Live 12 ran out of allocatable memory, not physical RAM.

    You have 24 GB installed. This is not a “buy more RAM” issue.

    This is almost always one of these:

    1. A plugin leaking memory when Live tries to serialize state during Save

    2. A corrupted device state from 12.3.2

    3. A specific track/device that explodes memory when written to disk

    4. Very large sample pools (especially if RAM mode is enabled on many clips)
    The key detail:
    It crashes when you save, not when you open.

    Saving forces Live to:
    • serialize every plugin state
    • pack undo history
    • write sample references
    • compress project data

    That’s when bad plugins show themselves.

    Here’s how you isolate it — fast and methodical:

    Step 1 — Disable Undo History
    Open project → immediately do:
    Edit → Clear Undo History
    Then try Save As.

    If it works, your undo stack was massive.

    Step 2 — Save As to new folder
    Don’t overwrite.
    File → Save Live Set As → new name.
    This sometimes avoids corrupt write blocks.

    Step 3 — Remove half the tracks
    Save a copy.
    Delete half the tracks.
    Try save.

    If it saves → problem is in the deleted half.
    If it still crashes → problem is in the remaining half.

    Binary search it. Brutal but effective.

    Step 4 — Freeze heavy instrument tracks
    Before saving, freeze CPU-heavy tracks.
    Some plugins allocate memory during state write.

    Step 5 — Check RAM mode in Simpler/Sampler
    If you have lots of clips set to RAM mode, that can spike memory during save.

    Step 6 — Watch Task Manager
    Open Task Manager → Memory tab.
    Hit Save and watch memory spike.
    If it climbs rapidly before crash, that’s a leak.

    Now here’s the uncomfortable truth:

    If this only happens in 12.3.5 and not 12.3.2, you may be dealing with a regression bug.

    Test this:
    Open project in 12.3.2 → Save As copy → then open that copy in 12.3.5 → Save immediately.

    If it crashes again in 12.3.5 but not in 12.3.2, that’s version-specific.

    In that case:
    Either roll back temporarily
    Or report it to Ableton with the crash dump

    Be practical here. Don’t fight a broken build if rollback solves it.

    Now I want one answer from you:

    Does memory spike right before crash, or does it just instantly die?

    That tells us whether this is a leak or a serialization bug.


    But in this case, it is likely only the plugins which are loaded into this existing project, right? So figuring out which one should be rather easy. Systematically remove them and deliberately crash it until it doesn't anymore. Starting with the newest things you have installed first, and those from smaller vendors or even consider what Teams released them.

    It can be difficult, unless Live crashed upon loading a certain 3rd party plugin. I had this a lot of time, this you can avoid easily.

    You could try to read the crashdump, which is in the AppData folder somewhere. Think there were tools to make them readible.

    Otherwise you could try the plugins you have in your project, which crashed one by one till you find the one making trouble.

    (Thats why i keep my toolbox minimal, because less 3rd party plugins, means less chance of something crashing, specially if the version is long out, sometimes even refuse to upgrade.)

    Yes only the one, which were used in the project.

    @clone but it does say Out of Memory. Maybe the Page file is to small?

    sounds like some plugin was filling the memory with garbage, so that Ableton run out of memory.

    i would try to open all plugins separate, try around various things and then see if it crashes.

    @nmkeraj how long does it till the project crashes? is it upon loading a plugin or longer into working in that project?

    is the project file readible?

    Hi again. I will try your tips as soon I get back home.

    The project opens properly. All plugins load well. No errors indicated. It plays well.

    I want to replace the existing project after few midi changes. So, ctrl+S then”…Do you want to update to newer version” then “Do you want to replace…” then crash info.
    I try to save it just after opening it, without any changes, and the same problem occurs.

    The project was replaced many times before.

    Instead of overwriting, choose “Save Live Set As…” and give it a new name in the same project folder.
    If that works, the problem is specifically with the replace/overwrite step, which can indicate a corrupt project file or index issue.

    If you've tried to resolve memory issues (which it probably isn't) then if it's a plug-in issue then the only reasonable way is to isolate the offending one.

    Start with first track, save each plug-in settings (as presets or whatever, for backup in case everything goes wrong), then delete the track. Try to save. If it crashes, restart/reload and move to the next track.

    Eventually you'll find the track that crashes, now repeat the exercise but just remove one plugin at a time just on that track until you find the naughty one.

    If it still crashes after that whole routine then it's something else. Can you start a new project and save that? Still crashes? If not, add some plugins etc. etc.

    Annoying as fuck I know.

    How many other projects have you worked on since you updated to 12.3.5? How did you update to 12.3.5, cleanly or over an older installation? What was wrong in 12.3.2 that you updated to 12.3.5? Have you tried any of the "remove one plugin at a time" steps already suggested?

    The lack of information turns your problem into a guessing game.

    I have just opened the project, selected half of the tracks and hit Delete button … the crash info appeared! Crash while editing the project! … Wanted to find the culprit by elimination.

    Don’t crash reports give details about errors?
