I have an SE-1x (and an ATC-1). The SE-1x is great for creating most analogue-style sounds, including mono pads and leads. I think the usual explanation that they're good for basses comes from that it's modelled around a Moog, which has always been popular for basses. The SE-02 sounds similar to the SE-1x, but the envelopes seem a little slower, and the filters definitely sound different. The SE-02 sounds flatter and more "plastic", especially when you increase the resonance.

SE02 is da bizness. Period. Great for bass, leads und freaky stuff could do analogue pianos but only got one note poly.

Dirt cheap second hand, well worth it. If second hand, need to watch knobs aren't too wobbly cos no room for even even thin fingers. I got it sorted though, mines fine cos i 'pinch' the top rather than cram fingers right in, so dont have same problem others seem to complain about.

I also have and highly recomend, JU06A, SH01A both polyphonic and Roland TR6S, very poweful underated intuitive machine, they all are.

But my fav is the synchron player, blimey, lost for words, many many thanks to all the suppliers, might do a quick simple tutorial on Counterpoint/Harmony if i can find time. There's a 30 sec christmas video on my ytube channel shorts, give you an idea what can be achieved with a few Symphonic tracks, including choirs, brass, strings, bells etc, very easy to get the sounds to knit together.

I had an SE-1 and used the ATC series, and currently have an SE-02 which I love. Unfortunately the time differential between owning them @Kate Middleton is over a decade (I got the SE-1 in 1998 I think, and had that and the ATC series from Studio Electronics up until around 2005.... then I got the Roland SE02 on day one release...)...so it makes it hard to say as never done a "shoot out" so to speak.

I loved all of them, but the SE-02 really hasn't had me missing the SE-1, as while it shares the mini Moog architecture and flow, it is also capable of a lot more, in ways that I like, and with also having a Moog Minitaur... I don't feel I'm missing out on much for what I personally need from real analog mono synths (although I'd like an Arp Odyssey and to replace the MS-20 I once had as well)... (but honestly pretty happy with the state of emulations on those ~for the most part~ kinda thing with gforce and whatnot...

tl/dr: if you can get an se-02 at a good price, I don't think you would regret it. It's solid. small, sure, but I've got big hands and it hasn't been a problem, and works better for me as easier to move around with than some of the others mentioned... :)

It all depends on what you want, I had an SE-02 when it came out, I wanted a minimoog sound, but I thought it sounded pretty Meh,
so I brought 1 Behringer model D, which was almost perfect for what I wanted, so I got another 3, and polychained them.
    sounds huge.
