    Hello guys,
I have a question: I am a legitimate Cubase 14 Pro user and have been using UVR5 as a stem separation tool so far.
I’ve been quite satisfied with it, but if I’m not mistaken, there haven’t been any updates for this tool for a very long time.

I’ve heard that the stem feature in Logic is supposed to be very good.
Now I’m wondering how the stem separation tool in Cubase 15 Pro compares to that.

I was actually planning to upgrade to Cubase 15 only next year, because I feel a bit taken advantage of by Steinberg, paying €99 every year for an update is not cheap, and I personally didn’t find this update particularly impressive.

I would only upgrade because of the stem feature if it is really good. Then I wouldn’t have to constantly switch back and forth between UVR and Cubase.

    Thank you very much!

It's limited because they aren't going to cannibalize Spectralayers by bundling in the exact same functionality into C15 essentially for free. You get 4 stems, and the algorithm is equivalent to Spectralayer's "Fast" quality. Obviously this is outpaced by higher quality modes of any dedicated stem separation application. It's not terrible, it's just a nice to have utility to compete with other DAWs that include similar, basic stem separation functionality.

Also, I don't blame you for not updating to C15, it was a bit of a stepping stone release that focused mainly on expression maps, and then a ton of miscellaneous things. I think C16 will be a more complete package of all the changes they have been making since 13, which is why it's OK to skip versions sometimes.

4 stems is also what a good percentage of users end up with when doing quick UVR/Demucs runs. Steinberg isn’t limiting Cubase to avoid competing with SpectraLayers. SpectraLayers isn’t what people reach for when they want top-tier stem extraction in the first place. DAW developers aren’t going to rebuild a full stem-separation engine inside the DAW when better first-pass results already exist. They just need to keep up with other DAWs, and you could probably look at Logic more than most other competitors.

If someone needs cleaner separation, they’ll just do it outside the DAW anyway. You probably don’t want your main DAW machine tied up for hours running high-quality UVR/Demucs_ft renders (15–20-skip passes) just to extract stems. You're firing up Spectralayers after you get that out of the way.

UVR5 is still one of the best seperation tool. The application itself hasn't received any updates for some time. In principle, this isn't necessary because updated separation models are still being released, mainly because the application is open source. The latest models provide excellent results.

Thanks a lot @ all! This realization saved me €99. Like I mentioned, I’ll pick up Cubase when it’s on sale next year.

for me mvsep . com is perfect! i remember i tried UVR5 on my i9 macbook pro and was a pain, even red screen, UVR5 is a resource-intensive AI tool, from then if i have the chance to run any process on the server side im good with! too much heat for very long periods components are no happy with that.maybe I'll try it on my new arm computer anyway.
