Per TDR's Labs Telegram channel, the TDR website apparently became collateral in Russia's blocking of websites hosted by non-Russian owned providers:

After New Year holidays, I noticed that the tokyodawn.net website had stopped working. It's not that I visit often (after all, I'm more of a writer than a reader), but there is a closed forum for beta testers. Yan released a beta version of his new plugin (powered by Finesse, but dedicated to normalizing stereo issues in mastering), and I couldn't access the forum.

Further research showed that the site is blocked by TSPU hardware. For those who are completely unfamiliar with the subject, TSPU are “black boxes” that are mandatory for providers in the Russian Federation; TSPU performs surveillance: where you can go, and where, according to the relevant authorities, you cannot. Access to a resource can be blocked by court order, which is easy to check on the relevant official page. You can work with such a decision by trying to challenge it.

But access can also be “half restricted” for some rather ephemeral reasons. What does this look like? A connection to the site is successfully established, data exchange begins, but after 13-16 KB of data transferred, an artificial illusion is introduced that the connection has frozen - the data is simply ignored. Why is this done? First, to complicate diagnostics. For example, a tool that checks whether the site is working by executing short requests will consider that everything is normal. Another analogy came to mind. Imagine a medieval castle with enemies crowding in front of its gates. The gates open slightly to let 13-16 soldiers through, and then quickly slam shut. Try to imagine what happens next.

So, there are no complaints about the tokyodawn.net website itself, but it is hosted by the German provider Hetzner, with whom there were disputes over the implementation of Russian articles of law in 2023 (“the foreign owner of the resource violates ...”). Apparently, the time has come to put threats into practice - to introduce a “semi-block” of all its resources. This “semi-block” has been applied to the tokyodawn.net website.

The problem of restoring access to tokyodawn.net from the Russian Federation (including the purchase of products in rubles) will have to be solved in the near future. Either by changing the platform, or by copying the site to the ru domain, or some other way. I'll start with the “TDR Collector” utility. It allows you to easily install and update Tokyo Dawn Labs products with a single click. It's easier to update than to transfer the entire site.

In general, I want to wish all users of Tokyo Dawn Labs products a successful 2026, more music and good sound, and less of all this.

I'm happy for those for whom everything is working.

Does this mean TSPU hardware is VPN agnostic? You cannot access tokyodawn.net even with a VPN?

Well, that's odd. I just realized that I have Kotelnikov GE v1.6.6 but the site has v1.6.5 listed as the latest build... ? :dunno:

Anyway, site is solid, working fine from the U.S.—sign-in, downloads, video, whatever, so I have no idea what any of this is about.

It's just Russia that wants to bring the banhammer down on Hetzner, who are a very large German hosting provider (~500k servers). The TDR website is just collateral.

Oh, good question, I had to ask AI:

TSPU has blocked specific VPN protocols: OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2, V2Ray, and later Shadowsocks, among others.

In 2025, Roskomnadzor updated TSPU's firmware multiple times to target additional protocols: VLESS, SOCKS5, and L2TP — previously among the last reliable options for bypassing blocks.

By late 2025, TSPU blocked 258 VPN services (up 31% from the prior year), with plans/modernization aiming for up to 96% effectiveness against circumvention tools.

Users still bypass TSPU via obfuscated protocols, custom setups, or emerging tools (e.g., certain VLESS variants, GoodbyeDPI/Zapret helpers, or non-standard fingerprints).

Reported through TG : it's working fine in Saint Pet (1:30 am), Moscow (same), and Yekaterinburg (3:30 am) despite the -36°C (a normal summer).
