That's all so fucked up...in a twisted, evil sort of way. My enjoying it brings to my mind perhaps a need to question my relationship to such things. I guess that's what good art might hope to distill.

Fucked up, sure, maybe. In an evil way? Nah. People like to pretend art signed an invisible social contract. Entertain me, disturb me only within polite limits, tuck existential dread into digestible packaging. Noe strolls in like a lab technician, on crack, and says: "What if cinema isn't anesthetic? What if it's a probe? Not a lullaby, but a tuning fork pressed against the skull." The outrage over that low frequency tone is revealing. The complaints, the walkouts from theaters, aren't really about sound? It’s about consent to discomfort. Viewers feel betrayed by the assumption that buying a ticket buys safety. But art has never honored warranties. Goya didn't offer refunds for nightmares. Bacon didn't hand out emotional seatbelts. Noe simply uses the tools available in his era. Subsonic vibration instead of paint, sensory manipulation instead of brushstroke. Different medium, same ancient sin, forcing awareness where people prefer numbness. Calling it "unacceptable" is often code for "I wasn't prepared to feel this." Fair emotionally, flimsy philosophically. Art isn't obligated to soothe. It's an instrument for inquiry, and inquiry is rarely gentle. A microscope doesn't apologize for magnifying bacteria. Noe's cinema magnifies violence, trauma... and the fragility of "reality" perception itself. The discomfort is the point, not a side effect. Audiences tolerate manipulation constantly. Sweeping strings telling them when to cry, color grading telling them what to desire, editing rhythms engineered to trigger dopamine like slot machines, but when the manipulation isn't sugar coated, when it doesn't flatter emotional comfort, suddenly it's framed as unprovoked violence. Same machinery, different flavor. One is candy, the other medicine without cherry syrup. People don't hate distortion. They hate losing control of their interpretive bubble. Noe pokes holes in that bubble and weaponizes form to make the body react before the intellect can build defenses. It isn't cruelty for cruelty's sake. Phenomenology with sharp teeth. A reminder that perception isn't neutral and neither is spectatorship. You're not just watching the film. The film is watching your nervous system back, and you felt it. Maybe even puked a little. So, the real "scandal" isn't that Noe crosses a line. It's that he proves the line was imaginary, drawn by audiences who want art to behave like background noise in a waiting room. But cinema at its most alive isn't furniture. It's confrontation. A mirror that doesn't flatter and a question that doesn't whisper. Whenever art stops being a product and becomes an experience that resists consumption, people panic, not because it's wrong, but because it obviously works.

Darren Aronofsky also came up with a few interesting ideas.
