For half a century, he tried to prove that human ancestors had been visited by aliens.
He summarized his theories in book form: he sold almost 70 million copies, and they were published in over 30 languages.

Died after a short hospital stay

In the spring of 2025, von Däniken announced that he would be slowing down due to health reasons. His daughter, Cornelia von Däniken, told the Keystone-SDA news agency that her father died of old age in the hospital in Interlaken on Saturday.

RIP and have a good trip beyond the stars!

I did enjoy his yarn a lot while believing none of it, and I have to give it to him: unlike a lot conspiracy theorists he never went to the nasty side of that but kept to his thesis and worked that.

Erich von Dänicken was one of the biggest full blown idiots the world had ever seen.

... and because there is no heaven and no hell he doesn't "rest" ... so these "wishes" are obsolet. Will he be remembered? Yes, by family members and personal friends. That's OK. In the greater public: Yeah, as idiot par example.

One of the best thinkers of the past century.
Not hidered by the cancel culture, was always willing to defend his views and provided new insights.

Abhorred by "the more serious" archaeologists because you were not allowed to deviate from the original story.
Thanks to his questioning and daring to ask questions, many dates of dating have been reviewed and it was discovered that the original doctrine was wrong.

personally you can disagree with his theories, but people like Von Däniken provide a different insight and did so in a decent way without judging.
In addition, many of his described topics are very interesting and time will tell how correct he was.
Unfortunately, this will be less and less in the near future.

It's OK to ask questions (he never had scientifically verifiable answers)... I'm more likely to go with Stephen Hawking.

    RIP both of you

I am not sure, if i find his work important or even remotely scientific.

What i truely wonder, how earn these people, who make pseudo science their money to survive?
(Or are there enough people, who throw money at them and the publishers?)

I am also more likely to go with mr. hawking!

The problem is, most of the people will always rather read trash-science than true science, so if you want to make money... but speaking of Mr. Hawking he's about the only one who wrote a great non-trash science book(s actually) and made (quite a bit of) money from it.

Nevertheless, it was great fun reading Daniken's books when I was a teen. Loved them, didn't quite believe his theories, but made me think. That's not bad - you learn how to think critically, eh?

Rest in peace Mr. Daniken. Thank you for all the fun stuff you've written.

Yeah, because there was nothing and the nothing is exploded, is sooo super scientific...
And that oil was the result of dead dinosaurs, despite the lack of any experiment showing the chemical process...
And that species developed out of random mutations but then also stopped and now works to preserve the look and eliminate mutations. Yeah, nothing to see here, it's just all randomness:

And these people claim Daeniken was the dumb one?

It always surprises me the animosity people have towards someone who thinks differently than they do. Like if you dont agree with me, and I can't convince you oh well. Unless it is actually causing harm to someone Ive never understood how people can get so angry and disrespectful. We are all entitled to our own opinions, and like assholes and elbows, nobody cares.

History Channel. Probably "alien/ufo conventions" appearances, and book sales/autograph signings.

What I'd like to know is if these people seriously believe what they are selling, or not (modern snake oil).

I didn't think his theories were bad. They were just different from some others "Holy Books".

The problem with that comparison is that others' "Holy Books" do not rely on actual evidence, but instead require pretty much blind faith. They take the lack of proof, and turn that into "proof".

All of these UFO/Alien conspiracies attempt to twist concrete facts like archeological sites, art, language, culture, recorded historical and astronomical events; and repurpose them to fit their BS as proof of things they aren't.

One does not hold up to any scrutiny at all, and the other doesn't even try to.

well the original works by Hawkings didnt make him money, but rewriting it for the masses made. He still did during that time lots of serious research and yes a lot of that was fiction at the beginning, till actual equations proved that it was right what he had thought of. (you develop a feeling for how equations solve and turn that into a mental picture -- see black holes actual miss energy due to virtual particle pairs are being created.)

Depends how you get in touch with these books?

I heard about alien archeaology in the night program of a tv channel, i dont know ... the they feels super loose ... and has certain logic holes in it.

If he maybe went into sci-fi made he wouldnt be remembered today, by anyone?

any RIP ... afterall its a human, who died.
