Has anyone tried remote Desktop for music production?? Could it be any good?

For running big projects (with VSTi synths) when you're not at home and have a potato laptop

Use something like Parsec or AnyDesk. I personally prefer Parsec, but will use AnyDesk when I need to collaborate with multiple people.

 

SyncDNA is great for colabbing with multiple people with audio, midi and video in real time. for simply remote control the previously mentioned options suffice.

 

Excellent recommendation! I'll probably switch to their paid subscription once they introduce support for windows users.

 

i use a bunch of older mini computers, headless, as standalone processor or standalone synth - and use KDX or apple remote desktop to ontrol them from the mommy computer.

 

main problem with Windows remote desktop is it breaks audio every time (every session creates virtual WDM audio device limited to 44.1kHz),

what you can do is, use Reaper's ReaStream plugin to send and receive audio over networks,
Tailscale is then the kind of VPN you can use to access your home PC remotely,
also if you want separate audio server(s) for hosting virtual instruments, check Vienna Ensemble Pro and AudioGridder

 

After years of faithful use of Teamviewer, I fed up with their commercial crippleware.
I wanted a cross-platform remote Android->Windows / Windows->Windows remote desktop and most of all something allowing lan only connections and wan (optional), so for some period I used Netop, but even being professional, didn't like their awful Android controls.
I tried Anydesk, nah, Parsec, nah.

Then I found freeware Rustdesk, it has everything I need, plus a great Android controls, so I found my beast.
I wouldn't bet on speed, though, as I can use it through lan but with Asio Link Pro as network audio router, it gives acceptable latency.

 

I don't remote into systems for audio use really, apart from the music library streaming business, but on the occasion I've used Sonobus to record lossless streams from various devices. It's low latency-ish but when you're doing ambient improvisations with friends it's more than fine.

WireGuard VPN + Sunshine/Moonlight streaming sofware. All free and open source, but a little bit of setup. I have a DDNS dodcker container to update my IP.
