Yes, the photograph or piece of art is what we work off of.

I don't remember Orange socks but looked it up...grizzly murders without resolution for the victims.

In the case of my hopeful song, the murder of the man with the violin's wife and children is the threat against him if he tries to escape from the demonic art installation by the alien artist on Spring Street, NYC. Abner Morgan and his family, Vicky his wife, 12 year old Abner Jr. and his sister, 10 year old sister Lura Elizabeth were abducted from their secluded home in the mountains of West Virginia in 1887, kept in cryogenic stasis and connected mentally by alien technology in a highly advanced computer program where they have had a simulated life experience for the past 80 years, this being 1967 when the photo was taken. Their life inside the program is boring and predictable, the boundaries of their small farm hard and fixed and only provided to keep their minds sane enough to utilize them in "art pieces" or displays akin to a zoo whenever the want arises. In this particular instance Abner has his homemade fiddle and is dressed in the actual clothing that he was wearing on that long ago Sunday morning just as the family was preparing to hitch their mule to the buckboard and ride to church on that beautiful Spring morning. The old leather case full of local dried herbs that his wife and daughter gathered as tithe for the preacher and his wife are there on the floor next to him as a constant reminder not to astray from his captivity as well as another tap to keep him honest, the flimsy twine representing the psychological binding inflicted upon him. Abner is instructed to not attempt to escape as his family will pay the ultimate price of annihilation lest he do so.

His wife Lura has had enough of their pointless and mindless life which she as well as the rest of the family feel is a life of constant torture although they are all together. She wants Abner to disobey the "artist", it being the only way for any of them to end their misery and as well the only way to stick a finger in the eye of their captures...little do they know that this is the crux of the "art" piece, namely a psychological game that bestows free will on a captive mind not unlike how elephant handlers destroy the will of a baby elephant by tying it's foot to a tree with a thin rope. The adult pachyderm will be psychologically unable to break it even as an adult and will have no will of it's own as a great beast when older. Lura, Abner Jr. and Lura are ready to die to escape their captivity, they've had enough.

Now it's up to Abner to decide...to flee this living diorama to free his family from the imposed virtual living hell or to continue the drudge of a slave's life.

Putting all this in a 3:45 minute song is my burden, joy and self imposed task.

@Usr4321 i agree regarding change, its actual the only constant thing in life thats always the same ironically - i liked your entry though, reminds me of french cold wave from the 80s with its sense of rhythm and minimalism. i love the analog tones and the overall wickedness that i find a lot in early industrial, the overall sound design is great. very cool dude

wow thats a great synth string sound @Lois Lane is that a preset or did you make that? im pretty skilled at synthesis and that sounds really good man, sounds really close, i might have to try Zebra out - i can tell youre kind of just jamming even if i didnt read that but it sounds good. really impressed with the synth sound though, very well done patch

I think this is one way to do it, but i also thought about your version, which also might not suite everyone who maybe plays an instrument and does not use samples, but that´s a different beast i would participate in since i struggle with very artsy images probably because they activate different part of my brain than music

Not to spam this thread but i was actually thinking about starting some form of sample/image/ low level competition thread similar to this, maybe more raw and aplicable to wider audience or should i say more narrow.

Following the famoous "Give me limitations" saying know in musicians circles i was even thinking about limiting the time to 4 minutes(?), maybe screenshot from the daw/timeline would play well into that for a bit more structure and importance/meaning for tech chatting, but i´m still exploring the rules part.

Also vocal samples, it would be interesting to hear what everyone would pick..
    Thinking outloud.

Hey I read the linked text, and I also missed the due date!

Fluxus, a rebellion of youth that had happened a thousand times before. Why bother, in the end it became established and followed its destiny, just like all the other attemps of this notion did.

Based on this accord. What is the criteria on which an idea or movement is measured? And what should this measurement express? Its success?

But I do like the idea of accessability of art. Funny to say the sign in the back of the gentlemen that says „street theatre free“ which directly translates as „street art“ to me. Another movement, that brought art (as a form of expression, not motivated by money or non-anonymous fame) to everyones eye, who would bother to look. (Spoiler: Street art was also taken from the street back into galleries)

I may understand the notion of critiquing class, establishement and the old continent in the definition of fluxus. However I dislike the aspect of dispiting aspects of art as imitation, abstraction and humerously „art“-ificial art. I supsect this dude coming up with the fluxus definition was a bit angry, maybe. Otherwise I’d say it is funny to neglect a very name and nature of the global phenomen that is art that you are trying to change.

More interesting, this welcomes a discussion of the nature of art. My unromantic take: Human made interpetations of the world. Condensed ideas, that were important enough to tribute them with time in making a thing, and that thing might be not the thing itself but the very thought of that thing, Does the thing make you want to stop and spend some time with it? The artist may declare an entity (thing) as art, but it only really becomes one in the eye of the beholder. So meaningless art is no art. To the rescue, nothing has universial meaning, and what should it matter if it does? So in short: art is everything that makes you stop and be mindful with it without anyone forcing that reaction ultimately on you.

I think Fluxus failed. It was defined to defy the eye of the established, commercial circles. But as our lifes today happen now unprecended in a gallery itself, on screens we take with us everywhere we go, therefore everywhere we are. And everything is curated by algorithms. Which are in the best case only there to short circuit our brains, without further direction. And in the worst with one.

Finally (with a cheek in tongue), I would like to reference the „score“ instructions fluxus artist gave for their performances. Also I wanted to pay the behaviour of Maciunas (playing animal sounds to a reporter to „explain“ fluxus) a little tribute.

    In February record:

    - A lid sliding over your kitchen table

    - A metal trash bin filled with water slapped against

    - Scraping ice from a freezer

    In March record:

    - Yourself going upstairs on concrete stairs

    In April record:

    - Birdsong

    Wait 68 month

Make a song with the points above.
