@paul_audioz I'm glad you discovered what this Appimage is all about, If you read my previous post, there is a link with various applications in Appimage format.

Edit: If you want to create a shortcut to the application on the desktop, press left keyboard button Ctrl + Shift at the same time and drag the Appimage application to the desktop, a shortcut will be created.

I heard about bottles earlier, but it sounded a bit too difficult for me. When I was trying to get EZDrummer3 running in Wine, I did not succeed. So I googled it and I found a video about somebody who got it running in bottles. So I thought let's give it a go. But to be honest, the guy in the video installed a bottle and installed EZDrummer3 and them bam, it worked. Just like that. Guess what happened to me? No! It did not work immediately! I had to make several additions and I also had to change the registry to get the patterns libraries working and they still do not work properly, but hey, I can use the drum sounds of the packages.
Would I suggest a new Linux user to use bottles to get EZDrummer3 running? Hell no! Better to look for a Linux drum VSTi......or just use a Kontakt drum Library....

I will slowly think about moving to Linux, sick of how MS sells polished crap as windows 11 to me ... stupid decision left and right ...

So which Linux distribution for Music production?

I think i will go Bitwig and maybe experimental Ableton.

Can you keep all those windows based vst2/vst3 plugins working inside Linux?

Do normal windows programs work on linux? When they dont have an alternative on Linux?

There's still time to change my strategy for using Windows.

I've personally stopped updating Windows so it stays exactly as it is:

    StopUpdates10
Take your Control over Windows 11/10/8/7 updates with StopUpdates10 Free!
    Version: 4.7.2025.0424 (Date: 04/24/2025 - April 24 2025)
    Windows 11 24H2 is supported!

I've frozen Windows at the state it's in from early 2025. Nobody can mess with my operating system anymore.
If things get worse, I'll have an offline PC for my music and an online PC just for the internet, running Linux.

To start, I recommend Ubuntu Studio. It’s complete and doesn’t require initial configuration—best for beginners. Alternatively, Fedora Jam is a good choice.
I personally use Debian 13; for audio, I’d avoid bleeding-edge distros like Arch and its derivatives.

Unfortunately, not all plugins work out of the box—some require separate configuration in WINE or installing winetricks.
Plugins from the sister site tend to work better.

As for Windows programs, it’s a similar story. Most can be run, and there are plenty of alternatives available.

windows 11 is missing essential features, win10 still had, plus its bloated with AI crap and other bloatware, which is so deep integrated into the system, its almost impossible to turn off.
Future of windows will be riddled with AI crap and AI agents. The mission is clear MS has they invested into OpenAI and now they will rollout more strict online login only, more AI features, nobody asked for ... Usability and the users comes last.

no wonder win11 feels slower and like a piece of sh!t.

And no this so called AI, cant write proper code. In fact its for deeper tasks still very useless.

    Source link of the post?
I hope folks are complaining and stitstorm ...

I don't understand why they want to update. It's obvious, and I agree with them,
that Windows 11, with its AI stuff and other issues, is going to be a disaster.

That's why I'm talking about freezing the system to its current state.
Make a backup so you can use the same version of Windows for the next 40 + - years.

There's a lot of complaining and despair among many people forced to update from 10 to 11—due to a lack of computer skills, people are even buying new PCs. Screw what Microsoft and others are planning. Stay independent and self-reliant, and protect what you have.

Stop complaining and do something about it. It's serious; the tech world will be different in a few years.
Secure your system now, and you'll survive the future. If you do nothing, you'll be overtaken.

Let me explain the process again:

Using good backup software, create a complete backup of your operating system (C:/ drive) to a second hard drive. You can then use an emergency disk to completely restore your operating system.

That's exactly your problem: you're needlessly dramatizing things and driving yourself crazy with your negative view of Linux. I bet if you don't change your attitude towards Windows and keep calling it a piece of crap, you'll be really unhappy right now—you need something new again, install Linux! But that's self-deception, because you have all the technical skills to make Windows fit for the future.

Please don't talk about an operating system and compare it to a piece of crap; that should be beneath you. Such foul language is unworthy of you. Come on, @ArticStorm, there are only three systems: Windows, macOS, and Linux! Sure, you vent sometimes, but that doesn't get you anywhere...it only makes you more dissatisfied!

Perhaps we should skip Windows 11 until this AI bubble flops, or until Microsoft understands all the shitty moves they’ve made since the Windows 10 release.
But they probably won’t even care, since it’s not their main source of profit and they mostly do it for OEM money.
On the other hand, they’re so aggressive in pushing Windows 11 that even the Windows 10 forcing feels light
Why they’re doing it is a mystery. The only thing that comes to mind is that they most likely got carried away hunting user data and bacause are afraid of being left behind out of this AI bubble.
The fall will be hard, and they will lose a little of what they had. Probably it’s for the best.

We are in a Linux topic and you keep posting about windows things.:dunno:

    And im weighting alternatives.

    Read on your own caution.
Not sure how long till windows 12 or something? MS had really something strategic about ending support, while win11 is still useless.
I did save a win10 iso with all scripts and debloating, which i will also keep as backup.
Cant wait for a notebook again with win11 :rofl:to nuke that again.

Gee, I think I have heard this somewhere before except for the linux part... :trashing: Just for the record, one doesn't need any third party apps to nix the updating junk. Personally, I would implement your overall plan now. Don't wait. The way the capitalist corporate models work, things are definitely headed for more of the same, or worse.

As far as the linux part goes, nothing has changed since the start of this thread or the beginning of time. The utilization of a linux build for an internet machine is certainly intriguing except for the fact that integrating a linux machine into a backend windows domain is way too obtuse of an undertaking to waste time on at this point. Win10 is malleable enough to be safely secured for internet and can be easily melded into a windows domain like butter on toast.

I did the same years and years ago. At some point you get tired of wrestling with it all though, and you install Windows and everything fucking works, and the relief is OVERWHELMING.
