you're telling me that my workflow is wrong. remember that part. how much do you think I am worried about your music?

When you can't back up what your'e saying, you have to go to "most of my listeners use headphones on their iphone."

If you are the kind of person who will not bother to load a certain compressor, limiter, etc. onto a channel because you know you want transparency instead of it's character, as an example. Why would you load a 16bit sample for some sound you want clarity from? It's not going to get better, it's going to get worse.

What is the point of this discussion? Most listeners listen to streaming services in MP3 or some FLAC

My doctor asked me for blood, urine, stool and semen samples. I just gave him my underpants.

They have a certain character for sure that I like, that's pretty good sample cd, Kraftwerk style. I think you can even find it on archive.org nowadays

I get the convenience point of converting samples and I personally think it is not really relevant what kind of bit depth etc somebody use. Important is why someone use a sample and how it sounds. Context matters, not those technical aspects.

On the other hand I somehow disagree on "the public no longer has the ears" statement. First of all the public (non music making people) always gave a shit about the way music was made/recorded. As if the woodstock crowd in 1969 cared about what string tension Hendrix used - that's only for those who analyse deeply or make music on their own.

Another thing is: the presumption how "people" listening too music is a rather lame approach to make music. If you think todays music sounds ass in general because of that, you're argument can be named an important part of the problem. I'm glad I'm not feeling there is a problem anyway, with todays million ways music can sound like.

    - RUSH Moving Pictures was recorded 44.1k 16 bit.

    - another thot to the op, I am using my onboard sampler provided by my daw. It imports a lot. I'd stupidly overlooked it for years.

At my last check-up, my Doctor told me my stool sample was outstanding! When I proudly thanked him, he replied, "No, I mean you haven't given it to us yet."

to me samplong js an art form. it involves discovering off the radar shit. then really viving with a certain part. then creatively cropking thise parts you like. then maybe processing them a bit. then arranging them in a new way.

for.me, these samples must always come from recordings thay eere not intended to be samples. I think the corniest shit ever is people creating new music to SOUND old so it can be sampled. And will s listener notice or care? ansolutely.not..But that lack of authenticity is prolly gonna manifest in other ways that, when its tkme to snow a finished producy, it sounds like a cheap youtuibe "type" beat. also corny as fjck buying shit made from people who sre "pro loop makers" how are you gonna download/buy s cymatics package, then take one of the loops YHEY created, retrofit it to your song? to me, how you would do thah is, when its all done, you never imply thau yku created thah song.

The journey is the destination man. Alot kf people trhing to get in this lane cuz jts s fast track to getting notice, or getting some clout. Then you got people like me who, even jf i didnt want this life, id still have it because music chose me. something authentic is alwaus going to be more. compelling. Its like a good writer! Ernest Hemingway could write about how a little boys dad pointed out an indian in the stream and then made am onion sandwich when they set up camp.

i digdess; i do like the way pertosjrsd.sampled; theud record.tjrm selves playing jams, mix with out oard hear, press to vinyl then ise the mpc. to. cut it up snd readrMhe it. in z mew way

I do agree that 16 bit / 44.1 kHz is sufficient for the end product, as we only hear up to 22 kHz at best, and for a big part of the population it will be a lot lower even.
For me the main reason why higher sample rates can be useful is for pitching. Especially when you pitch samples down, you can benefit from higher frequency content.

I use the dBpoweramp Music Converter = www.dbpoweramp.com
PreSonus - Studio One DAW: Wav to Flac & 48 kHz / 24 dB.

If I need an instrument that I don't have, I like to use a SoundFont (SF2).
For drums, I prefer to use the original samples from the Alesis SR-16 drum machine.

    Alesis - SR-16 - Drum Samples - 16 Bit - 44,1 - WAV

As one of the most popular drum machines ever made, the SR-16 has been used by everyone
from songwriters to live performers to remix engineers as their drum machine of choice.
The reason is simple: it features a great selection of 233 realistic, natural drum sounds,
offered both in dry form and sampled with our incomparable digital reverbs.

The exclusive Dynamic Articulation feature enables a drum sound to change
its tonal content as it's played harder for truly realistic performances.

The SR-16 features 50 preset patterns that were actually played in by top studio drummers,
not just programmed and quantized. You'll find enough built-in rhythmic variations
(with A, B and two Fill sections) for composing complete arrangements, and
you can create and save your own customized patterns and songs.

Plus, the SR-16 also provides complete MIDI implementation, a footswitch input, flexible programming and editing features and velocity-sensitive pad buttons. Plus, it's so easy to use that you'll be up-and- running and composing new music in minutes. Whether you need a songwriting partner or an accompanyist for live performance, turn to the all-time world standard in drum machines: the SR-16.

    - FORMAT: wav
    - 44,100 hertz 16 bit samples
    - Number of samples: 269
    - bass drums
    - hi hat
    - cymbals
    - percussion
    - snare drums
    - toms

Somehow no of my 16it samples looks like staircase when I load them into a sampler or drop them directly onto an audio track. You might want to check your monitor resolution or something

LOL his precious 'uber quality' 24-bit stuff will too if you zoom in far enough. All digital audio will, regardless of how fast your sample rate is or how deep your bit depth it, it's still not a natural flowing analog waveform. Its ALL sampled and stepped as the process does..

what about 12bit or even 8 bit samples?

I like to keep using the sample i have used long time ago.
Often trying to create new samples from scratch, if i feel like it.

Lately I've been making music exclusively with the sounds I capture with my PCM recorders and FM/PM synthesis
