I do not disagree with what you are saying, but there are self-driving cars and they all come with a CPU. Some Dick is bound to insert A.I. into it sooner rather than later.

Why is AI such an energy hog?

The reasons for its high energy consumption can be seen in the technical equipment of a new AI data center opened this summer by Elon Musk's company xAI. The facility uses 100,000 of the latest specialized chips (so-called H100 GPUs from Nvidia) simultaneously, as Musk announced on X. "Each of these Nvidia processors has a power output of 700 watts, which is roughly equivalent to the power of a modern, energy-efficient oven," says Ralf Herbrich, head of the "Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability" department at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam.

When this data center trains a model, it requires 70 megawatts for the calculations alone. "If you add the energy consumption for network transmission of the data, that doubles again. That corresponds to the energy output of 25 wind turbines."

You're asking bots why they turn to bots to answer questions?!

("bots" here is not necessarily an insult, I mean actual bots, as unfortunately more and more "users" on the internet are in fact literal bots)

You just have to use the internet and AI intelligently. After all, you don't eat or buy everything that advertising promises. Incidentally, everyone has the right to eat as much as they want, and if you communicate with AI for 17 hours a day, there's no law against it. Is it healthy? Of course not. Let's use common sense. Because without insight, there's no improvement!

The train's already left the station. Self driving cars and trucks are a thing and Amazon for example is getting rid of as many drivers as they can as soon they can and are heavily investing in just that. Just speaking of Amazon, Robotaxis are now trialing in US cities. They are autonomous (no stearing wheel or pedals) and this is the direction the company is pushing...buying the tech to dominate the transport industry.

Tbh I don't like how AI is taking over most things, Google is just a AI shitshow ATM. but..... If someone ever trains an uncensored AI to help crack plugins that would be fantastic, but imagine we are along way from AI doing something that complicated.

    This fits seamlessly with that:

Here in the Port of Hamburg, we have a 5G network. All self-driving vehicles communicate with it. The port authority is relying on self-driving container transport vehicles. The goal is to automate as much as possible. So-called "future guides" are intended to prepare dockworkers for the jobs of tomorrow—for example, in logistics with drones.

How's about for starters we stop calling it AI. using AI as a colloquialism for LLM's is a distortion of what AI research actually is. long story short. it's not an LLM

LLM's just hold a mirror up to yourself. its parroting back your level of understanding and the way you engage with it back to you. this is why we have all this "AI Psychosis"nonsense. this aint an LLM gaslighting you, this is an LLM revealing somebodies lack of epistemic competence. that is already rampant on social media which is why you have people falling left right and centre for specific dietary paradigms that are used as the ultimate solution to all health problems, rather than to anybody who actually understands nutrition and biochemistry, things that have context in certain conditions and health parameters, but are not universally applicable

LLM's aint really the problem. people who use LLM's to profess a certain level of competence or understanding in a topic that they do not actually have is the problem

I appreciate that - I've been googling words and facts for, well, 2+ decades now, to make sure I'm using the right word or term, the right date or century, that sort of thing. That level of rapid access is welcome.

That said, before Google, I had dictionaries and an entire encyclopedia on my shelves (that I or my parents bought for me). All I needed was to get up from my chair, walk over, pick the right tome, flip pages and voila: access to the words and facts.

A few years ago, I helped a dear friend of mine with her Masters and Doctorate in Music. English was a major hurdle for her, and it follows, clarity in her writing. So I reviewed and rewrote every single one of her term papers, and theses. Other than English, I caught a few outright falsehoods. When I asked her about it, she said she'd gotten it from Wikipedia (she's younger than me, so Wikipedia is the only encyclopedia she's known). I went to the article/page in question, and there it was: a complete fabrication.

Respectfully, I disagree strongly about this wobbly analogy, if only because the issue is not the bath water, but with the baby actually.

At the core of this debate is the question: do you enjoy thinking? If so, I should assume you would rather do your thinking for yourself, than let a machine feed you your own thoughts. Because this is what will happen to young and even older minds, the world over: we will lose our imagination muscle, our critical thinking muscle, and soon after that, our identity.

An argument can already be made, sadly, that much of the population's collective brain power has been dimmed since the advent of the internet. One need only watch the news... And for those of us who still read the news, it's even more appalling: spelling mistakes, words missing, clunky syntax - bad writing.

I could go on and on, and I love that, with ai, you can control a bunch of drones and fly them like a hive and do light shows in the sky and all that (if you've been to China or Dubai, you've surely caught a few in person). I love that "ai" can automate some tasks for lab researchers and shave off years in the hunt for new antibiotics, or vaccines, etc.

But I now have friends (musicians for now) my age, who talk to ai bots, and tell me what sort of career advice that bot is telling them - fawning over them really - and they seem to believe it. One was planning a lawsuit based on what that stupid ai was telling him - a lawsuit that I knew a judge would laugh at and throw out with prejudice. And then there are lonely souls who talk to these bots looking for some approval or solace, or both - I don't know.

Bottom line: we should, we ought, we must resist this slow colonization of the human mind. Remember that the colon is that part of the body that turns your gourmet dinner into shit. Colonization of the mind, be it by Memes, Wikipedia, FoxNews, or ai bots will turn it into shit.

Technology is a wonderful thing: we can power entire countries (France, Japan) or submarines with nuclear power, or with wind and solar (Uruguay), or save lives with medical innovations (Vaccines, X-rays, C-sections, RMIs), and we can fly to the moon and back - not to mention white sandy beaches all over the world.

But technology such that only a few understand it, only a few can make (code for) it, and only a few (truly) own it can only serve one purpose: enslavement (or colonization of the mind, if you prefer),

To return to your analogy, it's ai that's the baby - we (humanity) are the water. Water can be boiled, cooled, frozen, filtered, purified. The baby can only grow - and in real life, some babies grow into monsters (Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Putin - or your run of the mill Billionaire and/or CEO). We're at the infancy of ai - it's still a baby - now is the time to throw away the baby. Water is too precious to throw away.

sorry to disagree, but that i exactly what cars will do in less than 2 years from today.

the majority of AI agents communicate via LLMs with each other and there is no rational reason why computers in cars should not use such type of software. after the repeated failure of linear software performing autonomous driving L5 it is more than obvious that AI will be the appraoch which will solve this. fighter jets already have it, railway interlocking and autonomous motor vehicles will be next.

all of that makes totally sense, where posting AI shit to forums does not.
