When I was shipwrecked alone on a desert island after the Pastry Chef convention chartered party boat sank in the South Pacific in the Indonesian archipelago, the only other things that survived beside myself was my phone in the backpack that I was fortunately wearing which was in a waterproof sack when the ship went down and that yummy layered tort dessert from my previous post which I had saved for later and which was in a watertight pastry box. It was the last photo I took with the phone before the battery died. After that all I had to eat were coconuts. Ironically the name of the boat that resuced me was called Giligen's Minnow and the skipper had an uncanny resemblance to Alan Hale Jr.

 

I had mentioned Protean over here.

I had checked out Syne, but was unsure how much sophisticated control one had over the partials, compared with, say, Harmor, Parsec or Razor, and was less than impressed with what I could find online, such as on YT if recalled. It might be worth a return/review.

Hardly anything about Sumu, outside of Madrona Labs own presentations, since it finally arrived. There's one video I just scanned that has the title, 'The Future of Sound Design? Madrona Labs Sumu'. What's with the question-mark? Is he unsure that it's the future of sound design? '180 bucks? No way.' is one comment under the same or another video about Sumu.

Dawesome's Kontrast arrived a couple of months ago, speaking of wavetables, but I'm unsure why the images/tables themselves are always static for wavetable synths. Sure, the scanlines are now 'fractal/chaotic', etc. (ripped from Kult?), but it just looks like one of those static-image synths with a fancy scanline. Why not have a 'video-synthesizer' as part of the design, and/or 3D animation, which has been generating fluid dynamic 'wavetables' for a long time. The math is there. But that's an aside and maybe topic for another thread.

Madrona labs stuff is not widely known. I think their physical modeling Kaivo synthesizer is nice, I don''t know anything about Sumu.

 

If you're going to run a synth on a desert island, I can imagine at least 2 possibilities: Either you have a small solar panel and converter for your laptop or synth that survive in your backpack, or you have someone to just make whatever synth, etc. you want, no matter what:

These sounds are so old and dated-sounding, but the video is AI (possibly). So, to compare, because compare we must if we are to put on a shirt that matches (or not) our pants, we have 'dated' synth sounds against 'new' AI imagery (possibly, although AI is 'moving fast'):

Me: Hey, AI!
AI: Yes?!
Me: Code me a synth!
AI: Why not just let me make you a song!?
Me: Ya, sure, ok!
AI: Done!
Me: Oh wow that sounds great!
AI: Glad you like it!

Me: Well... I don't know. Something just doesn't feel right...
AI: Like your underpants are missing again?

You must too be a new incarnation to remember my beginning here. I haven't the foggiest about the date, the year 2011, but not the month or day. Perhaps I will write a song to commemorate, of course on an older, timely synth.

But it says so right under your icon and moniker; Jan 16, 2019. You have a ways to go yet to make it to 2029 for your tenth, (so you're safe to use a newer synth with little fear of personal guilt or social ridicule). Unsure where we and the world will be then, though, and if there will still be reliable electricity to power our synths. Fingers crossed.
