I'm going to buy the resonance suppression plugins during this Black Friday sale, and I've researched them. This is my conclusion. Which one do you think is better?

    1) Speccraft + Smart EQ4
    2) Waves Curves Equator + Curves AQ

I would pick none of these, but of the two options in the poll, easily Speccraft + Smart EQ. Much more control and a broader range of function. Both are excellent plugins. Curves series is good, but its too "one knob" for me. Depends on your workflow i guess. do you prefer more control, or something more simple to use??

Fab Filter Pro Q 4 -As refined or as broad as you want it to be. Simple to use with more control if needed.

TDR - Finesse - man this thing is so good. Its somewhat limited, but wow does it sound good. My number 1 pick. Its not practical to use it all throughout a mix, but for busses, mix-buss etc its my go-to.

Plain old Soothe 2 - just a classic. Simple, works well. Some tweaking available if needed.

Honorable mention - Acustica Dove. Has all the pain in the ass issues that come with Acustica plugins, but it can work very transparently when others are struggling to, although Finesse replacing that for the most part. Still a great plugin. A few different detection algorithms which is nice.

Honarable mention #2 - Reso, from Mastering The Mix. Beyond simple, minimal controls available, but when it works, it works very well.

All 4 in OP's post are great as well. I own all of them. Well,, i don't "own" the Waves ones hehe. I use a lot of these tools, as i do very heavy experimental sound design that often times needs a lot of taming. I'll cycle through them all. Sometimes just based off what mood im in, sometimes for a particular reason. Sometimes i literally will load a random one with a dice roll.

Something to keep in mind with these tools, is they can quickly ruin a mix. Unless you are abusing with intent, be careful to not suck too much life out of your sounds. Resonances are an important part of a sound. Removing too much can result in unnatural, dull, or lifeless sound. Same goes for the more "Auto" processors like Curve, or Smart-EQ. Always use your ears, and adjust what the plugin gives you as needed.

There's literally no reason to pick any of these over SpecCraft. It's the best one out there if you master how to use it, and also one of the cheapest.

For the OP, I have stopped using resonance suppression plugins since two years ago, but I keep SpecCraft when I need to mix a vocal into an instrumental. The plugin is extremely flexible and has lookahead, meaning you can go for 0ms attack if you want. It also has a fully fledged match EQ profiler inside and EQ compensation.

If you want to take a more subtle approach that is more dynamic EQ than resonance suppression, but still very similar to use, try WA Production DeTroubler. Super cheap and works great for smoothing out sounds. I always have it for smoothing out high frequency content in mastering (and usually, vocals).

disagree. SpecCraft is good, i use it fairly often. But I have found others perform better depending on the situation. The lookahead and hi-tweakability do allow for some excellent precision, but its not the only resonance suppression plugin worth having.

The new Slate Inf Horizon is awesome, my favorite resonance suppressor (and I've got almost all of them). TDR Finesse and Arbiter are very good.
