    FM synthesis. Got a DX-7? Or any free FM synths?
    Get a decent and simple "FM bass" going and tweak it further with EQ and/or overdrive, if needed.

    edit: Heck, it even sounds like something I can make on my "toyish" Yamaha PSS-480. Maybe it is a Yamaha PSS480! ;)
