I have issues with time management, and while you're perfectly right, I need some kind of pressure to keep going.
I have to confess i have some pieces I never ended after years!
I didn't expect to participate this time as orchestral music does not easily fit the picture, but decided to give a try a few days ago, mostly to test some new sound libraries.
So even if the result is far from what I was intended to do at first, I share it "in time" as a challenge.
Please forgive the poorly inspired result, as I speed wrote the end.

This is a short piece about a robot becoming conscious.

Despite time constraints and other everyday difficulties, I find your contribution
successful in terms of both content and craftsmanship. (The guy's got talent!)

@yodadl .. That was quite something for me, to be ushered through three distinct emotional states in the space of a short time. You are quite the storyteller!!

Thank you, I am glad I could share it with you all.
    Still no candidate for #16?

Merci beaucoup  That means something to me considering your musical background.

I love telling stories with music, if I brought you some pictures / feelings to mind, my duty is over :)

I was asked by another member to host #16, but I've got one (literally ) already under my belt, #1. I'll do it again if nobody wishes to do so. I'll sway to the will of the participants.

@Lois Lane Don't let a hit get to your head! Sweet Sixteen in murex purple sounds scrumptiously appropriate. The Golden piano bench is yours for taking, unless other horsemen thy challenge.

I shall await the prescribed two sunrise dictate before I presume The Golden Bench as my right, for perchance an usurper would rally to claim it as their own. In that case I shall not steal their light and so will remain in the shadows until that time. I will however when in this state of barzakh, my self induced purgatory, make ready with a chosen artwork to fuel our next shared six week adventure.

Who is late to the party? This guy! I would have been to shy to participate during the actual event. So here I am and I brought some thoughts with me as well :).

The picture at hand is fairly straight forward. You see a machine that resembles a human and what appears to be a human in the background. Both of them are set on a working floor of an industrial plant.

The imagery lets imagination run in many directions. As the brief description of the image includes a mechanical machine (robot) made alike an organic machine (human) operating in an organizational machine (industrial plant). So there is not just a similarity between the humanoid robot and, well, humanoid men. But also, if you think of them as machines, between all of the ideas your mind can fathom.

To get this point across, one needs to be critical of the term machine. In a simple tangible form, it might be a defined entity one could decisively pick out as something separate to its surroundings, which performs an act of transforming a present status into a future one consistently. I think machines (as it can be generalized as a term for everything there is, better to say everything can be understood as a machine) are closely tied to our idea of time and the principle of actions and consequences.

One key idea is the word consistently of a pattern, which is required so that we can form a mental model of the machine. We would not be able to do that if the machine had no properties that could be classified as similar over time.

So we are not that different to everything around us.

I am not so sure about the phenomenon of consciousness. After all it might just be a lucky function of our brain. Since our brain works by building models of the world, maybe consciousness is an operational model of ourselves, or a meta-model that just pops into existence when the underlying pattern recognition machinery gets powerful enough. To put this thought aside, that there might be an internal difference between the robot and the man. They both are set in a working environment. Remember when I talked about how a machine is defined by its property of repeatable transformation?

What does this mean for the pictured working human? What does it mean for working humans, whose work is now done by a robot? A machine replacing a machine. Is there more to being a human machine than the work it can perform?

Well, there is, at the very least it is the one sub-machine (because everything might be understood as a machine) that can’t subjectively be replaced, and that is your very own consciousness. The process of being aware of yourself will not be perceivable to anybody else – no men, no machine.

At first I took the (for many obvious) turn interpreting the image: Robots replacing the human workforce (or are projected to be) and mere mortal humans get stripped off their opportunity to transform their potential into capital, whereas entities with capital are enabled to be less and less reliant on the human workforce, which they would need to provide with a fair share of their dividends, leading to a more inhumane distribution of wealth (side note wealth in a broader sense: capital and life quality).

But then when it came to the composition of sound. I sat at my computer and hooked up a small MIDI-Keyboard. I played a loop, and then another and then another. You see this machine enabled me in performing. A performance that meant something to me because it bought me joy (I am not able to perform music live to any degree; it is enjoyable otherwise – and even if I were, I am only one human. To perform said piece without the silicon sequencer, I had to have 10 hands and a bigger brain to operate them all at once). So for me a machine allowed me to communicate this idea of questioning the purpose of the men machine and whether it is endangered by robot machines to you. While there are serious concerns about humans’ ability to make a living in the face of machines that can potentially replace them, said replacement will in the eye of the individual ultimately fail because replacement of one experiencing the quality in the world would mean it is not the very same person anymore – and hence no replacement at all. I hope my thoughts are somewhat understandable.

    TL;DR:

Humans are machines that can’t be fully replaced by other machines, simply because, ultimately, no other entity can replace the experience of being you to yourself. A computer helped me understand this. I am able to produce something meaningful to me (music) and experience it. That ability to experience something is my core function, which makes me human – supposedly.

Thanks for your kind welcoming words! I surely enjoyed your musical entry a lot and congratulate you (not necessarily for the non-contest, cause everybody is winning here, but to your ability to express in music so well :).
