These lists are going to differ massively depending on genre and approach to music, so I'll include those in mine. I find it hard to put my music into a genre, but the approach is essentially layered acoustic instrumentation with pop punkish influenced melodic vocals. No use of loops, samples, virtual instruments etc.

I try to keep my PC set-up as minimal and streamlined as possible. Tried everything over the years, settled on this stuff:

DAW: Reaper
Digital/Surgical Plug-ins: Fabfilter, Melodyne, Soothe, Ozone/RX.
Analogue Emulations: Exclusively UAD

Annnnddd...that's kind of it for music. Reaper is the best DAW I've ever used hands down, and is soon implementing fixed FX slots like Pro Tools and most likely post-fader FX soon after (I've tried the fixed FX pre-release version, it's amazing). Fabfilter needs no introduction, Melodyne is the current best at what it is, Soothe I love for the workflow, and RX/Ozone I consider utility tools more than anything. UAD for my many gripes and complaints do the best sounding analogue stuff that isn't convo based in my opinion. I've tried multiple times to use the best alternatives in hopes of ditching my iLok and selling my account, but their stuff just sounds amazing and the 1073 and 1176 react exactly like my analogue clones used to, way way closer than any other plug-ins I've tried.

Besides that stuff, alls I tend to install is Brave Browser, VLC Player with dark mode, and an old Adobe Collection pack that is pre-AI era and has ran flawlessly for years with no time-bomb or phone home issues. I'm happily at a point now where all of my installers no longer require keygens and are cured, so no antivirus conflicts or keygens being auto-deleted like before. Way less hassle.

I keep only active projects and software installed locally on my systems and then keep all private stuff like installers, photos, archived things on a few external drives for back-ups and recalls whenever I need. Clean SSD as a result and no folders upon folders of stuff, everything I need is located on the desktop. Fast and easy.

Essential ?

I like experimenting a lot, so there are soooo many plugins I haven't used in a long while but I still keep them around, because who knows ? Someday that weird MIDI chord generator might just be what I need.

However, if every software installed meant somewhere some kid is decapitated, I would... bad example. I would probably install nothing at all and play the acoustic guitar.

However, if I had to REALLY keep what I'll always use :

DAW : Bitwig (and all the stock fx)
Other fx : Zynaptiq bundle, Polyverse bundle, Overloud TH-U, Ursa DSP Boost.. Holy cow I just realized I can live without Valhalla

 

Silly you, Valhalla only comes into play after you live!

 

I thought I was the only one crazy using Reaper to authorize the plugins, it's the best workflow just NEW: boom !

 

Bluecats Patchwork Standalone is even faster.
