My Yamaha HS50Ms are about 10 years old, and I'm not a heavy smoker; they still look almost new. I think it also depends on the size of the room and the amount and type of tobacco. Ultimately, I would agree with you that for a heavy smoker, they will probably discolor after 10 to 20 years or more. Other factors such as heat, dust, humidity, ventilation, climate, etc. certainly come into play.

I hear Deep Purple were smoking the Marijuan cigars when they recorded this, probably why it never really took off. Imagine what they could have done if they stayed good and sober, a lesson learned well

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

The reason why SO many recording studios have closed over the last 20 years isn't because of the rising maintenance costs of keeping them going like we've always thought. No, It's because blokes only really used them to smoke when their wives wouldn't let them stink up the family home with all that nicotine (and other substances)

Now with all these vapes and things, it's a lot easier to keep clean!

(Yes I know I know, but all the funny answers were already gone)

Speaking as someone that had smoked a lot of weed in their lifetime: Will smoking a lot of weed in your studio lead to a build up of resin on your tweeters? Probably. Is this a bad thing? Maybe, it will probably make them harder to clean but will it effect the sound? Maybe, a bit.

End of the day, is this your studio? Are other people paying to use it? If yes, yes - if you want to be professional, probably best to take it outside. If yes, no - who cares? A bit of resin film might take a wee bit of high end off the top, but that might make your mixes sound better. Or worse. It depends. The tolerance differences in the electronics between two sets of the same monitors will probably have a bigger impact.

IMO: if smoking weed in the studio makes you more productive then the net gain will outweigh any possible but negligible side effects. If it causes you to overthink things, especially about stupid bullshit like this thread topic, then maybe lay off when you're trying to create.

I hate to be that guy, but somebody has to be that guy.

Do you have any finished tracks?

Instead of worrying if your equipment will survive the next 3 centuries in pristine condition, so that your descendants might one day finish your tracks, try finishing some tracks. And you will find that you have no time to worry if your equipment survives you.

P.S. If anyone wants to properly study the long-term impact, I offer my services. It's basically what I do every evening and most weekends.

Nah, all it does is leave a yellow/brownish film inside and out.

I've always used a static duster for dust weekly or so, doddle, or when i notice a build up and wipe down gear regularily with, lint free if poss, damp cloth, maybe every fortnight or maybe a month when i notice finger grime build up.

And an air duster on my desk maybe twice a year or when i see a build up, never too bad cos its always getting a static dustering and a swift wipe down few times a year.

Been workin decades, so i've sold a lorra lorra stuff, so it's best to keep it as, new as poss, cos you might wanna sell it down the line.

Spilling bong water all over your shit in the studio is probably the nightmare scenario, so don't do that. Doobies, pipes, chillums or anything not water related is a go to caress your high frequency.

Wouldn't condenser mic capsules, with their several microns thick membranes, be negatively affected long before tweeters?

    Absolutely.
That's why you should store the condenser microphone in a dust-proof place after use and, if possible, use a sneeze guard/pop guard.

I don't know if smoking affects speakers, but strange things happen with electronics, this is what a smoker's computer looks like :guru:

    Speaker cones (tweeters/woofers):

    - Do not touch! Cones are extremely delicate.
Carefully remove dust with a soft, dry brush or compressed air (low pressure, angled jet).

    - Do not use liquids or cloths directly on the cones – this can damage them or impair sound quality.

    Additional tips:

To minimize dust accumulation, cover the monitors with a dust cover (e.g., custom-made or simple fabric covers) when not in use.
If you work in a dusty or smoky environment, clean more frequently, as particles can stress the membranes.
