In 2022 I saw Ricki Rachtman at a Testament/Exodus/Death Angel. He lives here and came out to see them on the Bay strikes back tour in NC And Towards the End of the Exodus set Gary and Zetro made him get up on stage and introduce the next song which he called a "dance" song that he used to play on his old show. Then played Toxic Waltz the place went to 11

I only saw the last 2 years it aired (94-96) never cared for the Jamey Jasta remake they tried in early 2000s

 

I discovered MTV UK at the end of 1993. It was not encrypted at this time.
I said, man I need to make some audio tapes with all the music I can here on this channel. It was on the ASTRA satellite, the video signal was in PAL in Stereo. In France we were still dealing with SECAM with mono signal. (The country started to implement a special audio channel in STEREO for mainstream channels such as TF1 or Antenne 2) but it was a pain. Anyway back on MTV topic, This channel was great. I loved the PartyZone on Friday at 22:00 and Chillout Zone. I then said: I need to make video tapes of those Music Videos... I had to buy a Stereo VCR that could tape PAL video signal. I started to record hours during work time (while I was out) or during the night to then make audio tapes of the music I was interested. Who did the same?
Later I started to keep those music videos because they were great to watch again and again.
I then discovered in 1995 VH1, MCM, VIVA, VIVA2...
Oh my, this started to take all my time to sort all these Music Videos. I had to purchase a second VCR to make video tapes of only music videos I wanted to keep. I did that for 3 years then stopped in 1998 for a reason I cannot share and never recorded Music videos again. I still say that I am lucky to have enjoyed this time.

 

I would never have found FSOL without MTV. For that I am forever grateful to that channel.

If the channel had done things differently and music had remained the main focus, the operation would probably still be ongoing.

 

Oh yeah, I remember that one, Aeon Flux was awesome. Beavis and Butthead was great too.
But that other stuff.. how was that stupid show called? Jersey Shore? I loved what Southpark made of that though

 

Beavis and Butthead is what led me to Headbangers and also helped me figure out what kinds of music i was into. Especially the variety of music videos and clips they played i never would see on Daytime MTV. Most Days they had stuff on repeat with a few videos sprinkled in here and there. East Coast US the ball came on Sat11pm-2am. The (3rd) last hour became my favorite i remember recording a few VHS tapes so i wouldn't miss out.

Also Didnt the UK/Europe have their own version of headbangers? Riki would air clips with a Girl covering alot of oversea tours and artist

Thats cool you were able to do that i remember sometime Around 98 my dad had one of the bigger satellites installed @ home but never with intentions of a purchasing monthly subscription but somehow took the satellite and a PC tower that was bought only to be kept near the tv from someone the same person would periodically upload something to a computer disk then insert into the PC . That would happen about every 6 months when somehow the old code was cracked/compromised i guessing thats what happened anyways I was younger and remember we would get so many free ppv and premium channels it was unbelievable it worked for a good 5+years.. With that I found out about Much Music the canadas version of music video channel that filled the void for MTV a little when the stopped airing the ball

 

Well, I felt sorry for the "classic" MTV because it was a part of my life, but what it became wasn't for me. I don't know how many people watched its various channels in the last 10-15 years, but there is primarily an economic reason for such a decision.

 

I believe that on drum was Richard James Burgess, drummer of Landscape and co-inventor of Simmons SDS-V.
Not sure 100%, though.

It was definitely an 80’s and 90’s thing. I would say, up until the early 00’s. That’s probably when I stopped watching, because their reality TV shows started to take over and all music videos went online.

In a way the art of the music video has disappeared, which is sad. Yes, the biggest pop stars are still making (sort of) music videos of their singles for YouTube, but the budgets just aren’t there.

You had huge film directors directing them like David Fincher, Mark Romanek, John Landis, Spike Lee… A video like Madonna’s ”Bedtime Story” cost reportedly $10M. A music video premiere on MTV (or VH1, or MuchMusic etc) was a huge deal. Those days are simply over.

 

Ohh man... I started watching the latest batch of Beavis & Butthead (began last month) that's on Comedy Central (well, for me it's on a torrent site, but that's beside the point). And... it has the MTV spaceman logo with the "I want my MTV" bit sung by Sting. Definitely feels odd now having had this discussion.



As for the show, it's just as idiotic as it was back in the day, suits my intelligence perfectly. So yeah, I'm enjoying it.

Yea big time nostalgia for me too so much so i asked him about it this past weekend he said that the Pc was modded to emulate the DSS H series smartcard in conjunction with the actual directv receiver and dish he said that was the best way and because of that method the ecm signals directv would send to disable the hacked cards at first wasnt a big deal especially the way we did it all we would do is boot the new keys from a floppy disk and we were back on. He even told me that back in 2001 a week before the super bowl directv hit everyone unexpected and alot of the cards were no longer useable those were the ones that didnt have the pc running the emulator software. Looking back it was a cool time and great while it lasted but around late 2004 or early 2005 it was over for us directv moved to a new system more security

 

Wow. I kinda had a similar experience with Apollo 440.When it first came out , someone used it as opening theme for an extreme sports show and it was mesmerising. Years later I was searching it till I found it

 

it was about f°in' time to close ...mainstream music is dead anyway, the major labels are utersh°°t ... I really think we should put Audiosex instead of MTV there ...

 

Wait so do they still show actual music videos on MTV in Europe?? I don't think I've seen one in the US in about 20+ years. Back around 1999/2000 they spun off M2, which only showed videos (since all 'regular' MTV had become terrible "reality" shows), but it didnt last very long either heh.

I can still remember my parents letting us stay up to watch the launch of it and seeing The Buggles at midnight heh. I was 5 or 6? Fucking DEVO ruined me, was all over after seeing the videos for Satisfaction and Girl U Want heh. I liked their very first game show, Remote Control, which is where we got Kari Wuhrer and Colin Quinn from, and I could swear that's also where Jon Stewart got his start.. Headbanger's Ball is how I discovered Death Metal (Death and Sepultura videos during the 'Triple Thrash Threat'), Beavis and Butthead were legendary, Liquid TV, etc..

Once The Real World came out in the mid 90s, all downhill from there. Within like 2-3 years, videos were an afterthought at "Music Television".
