A few years ago, regular, very good virtual synths, without sound libraries, had a market price of around €199. Just add the very large sound library: 64 GB - 14,000, and you get €499. Omnisphere could also sell its synth for the market price of €199, and then they would have to buy each sound library separately. Eric Persin, the head of Spectrasonics, was formerly Chief Sound Designer at Roland; he chose this business model.

I'd say because of it's vast amount of libraries and recordings it's more comparable to Komplete, which is even more expensive

they are packing a hybrid synth-sampler with a big library of samples in one package most of which you likely already have
but some like one arranger type Workstation keyboard with all the bells and whistles rather than building their own setup from smaller synths and effect modules

well, It was lovely to see Steve Jobs performing Omnisphere :)

Jokes aside, I am quite hyped for the new features.
I hope there is a lock button for parameters we wanna keep the value for mutation button changes.

In terms of this being cracked for Mac, that I really am hoping that whoever cracks it makes rid of that horrible "timebomb" bug that totally kills off the audio of Omnisphere until you reset it.

Definitely ordering this. People bitching about the price? If I only had one synth, this would be it. Been using Spectrasonics since Atmosphere. This is an amazing feature upgrade. Aside from the improved modulation, hardware integration and separate VST racks, it will integrate into your existing Steam Folder (mine is 300 gig). A very powerful and versatile Synth just got better. Worth the money.

i can agree with that, but what if you're that guy who just bought it a month ago for full price, and now you have to pay another $199 ???
that's not a good policy. a lot of synth developers will let their customers know that a new version is coming and if you buy the existing version now, you'll get a free upgrade to the new version when it comes out. these guy elected to keep the upcoming new version a secret so they could continue to sell their product at full price to unsuspecting cutomers. that's a bad look in my opinion.

After all this time I had higher expectations, but it'll be a nice update.
The included effects have been a weakness (aside from Sonic Extensions) so new ones are much welcomed.

The upgrade price seems high, but considering Omni2 was 10 years ago, v3 should get a lot of free updates.
It definitely sucks for those who those who recently bought it though.

The update to version 3 is voluntary; you don't have to buy an update.

Here's an example from another company with the same business model: Studio One works like this: minor updates and bug fixes are free, and new features and updates are free, and you have to pay for them because, as is the case in the private sector, employees cost money for wages, taxes, and insurance.

The Presonus Studio One Pro 7 upgrade costs €137. I signed up for an update and paid for it, but I won't be buying the upcoming update of Studio One because the current functionality is sufficient for me.
