So it seems that social media and online streaming had a major impact and now the "video killed the radio star" which was MTV's first video on air, might seem ironic. The news here is that Paramount Global who owns MTV now , choose to shut down all MTV broadcasting stations across Europe and leave just one playing mostly reality shows. I don't know what are your thoughts but it seems that this time "The end of an era" is not just a clickbait

Agree. Well I guess it's more my inner thoughts on Media giants handling shows , stations etc that took over. I guess you are right about reality shows on MTV. It turned from pure music channel to something that has to do with music.

it's about as much an "end to an era" as AOL finally ending dialup service, in recent news articles. It is sometimes lunacy how long these companies keep something around that has been already dead for years. A lot of times the mention of them only results in "that still exists?"

I'm not bothered at all. Haven't watched any MTV since they ditched MTV2. That channel had great shows like Head bangers Ball and Ray Cokes (Roy Cakes) as a VJay.

While most of it was pretty shit, there were great shows... 120 minutes, Chill Out Zone etc. etc.

That said, Ray Cokes indeed was the man, I don't think I've ever seen show as self-consciously full of shit as that one was (what was it called... Most Wanted?). Yes, it was gloriously utter bullshit. The presenters and the staff knew it, the guests knew it, the viewers knew it. And we all loved every ridiculous minute of it. It was truly genius.

The last time I watched MTV or VH1 was more than twenty years ago.

The end of an era indeed.

It gives some clue how old I am

So... Did that Rob Dyerwhatever die or retire or something? My understanding was him and the VMA ceremony basically were the product for the last 20 years.

Life is weird. In my circles, the "end of an era" happened when MTV came out, not now when it went off the air.

Maybe... the end of two eras?

I can hear Crown Of Thorns by Mother Love Bone looking at this photo of Vanessa Warwick! Theme song to Headbangers Ball. It took me ages to find out what the track was and I became a big fan of the band.

    These MTV channels are disappearing

Paramount confirms that it will shut down five MTV music channels in the United Kingdom at the end of 2025: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live. According to BroadbandTV, the shutdown will also take place in Germany and Austria during 2026. While these music channels are being discontinued, the main channel, MTV HD, will remain, but with a focus on reality and entertainment programs instead of music videos.

The move is part of a larger restructuring of the Paramount media group. The company is increasingly focusing on streaming services such as Paramount+, which also features MTV content, and is dismantling traditional, linear TV channels.

Media consumption has changed drastically in recent years: Music videos are no longer discovered on television, but rather via social media or streaming services. Traditional music television is now considered a thing of the past.

Oh nooo...I just feel enormous sadness for those like me who lived the MTV years to the full, for those like me who belong to the older generation or what some call Generation X, for those like me who got up in the morning and immediately turned on the TV and tuned in to MTV, for those who recorded tracks on analog, who turned on the radio to record their favorite song on cassette, who bought records and leafed through the covers fantasizing, for those who saw the birth of the 8-bit era and its evolution into 64-bit. There are revolutions that make you sadly nostalgic but that you then appreciate, like all digital music, but paying for these consequences is not so great. How sad...what a terrible moment in history for all art and beyond.
