Seems like some bowed instrument from 'world music'?

Do you know a patch in Omnisphere or in UVI products that has this sound?

sounds like soft trumpets to me with reverb...

 

Actually this song was made in the 90s, so there was no plugins involved. Maybe it's some rare ethnic instrument?

 

rather easy to mimic brass type synth, a la Vangelis, lots of reverb any brass type patch could work
if it's from the 90s more likely a rompler patch, seems pretty generic

Are you sure it's a regular trumpet? not some clarinet or something else?

I need to render the instrument to audio and pitch it down a few semitones, right?

 

I read they used WaveFrame (UVI has a sampled one) Korg M1 and lots of Akai S900 samplers

No, I'm not sure. It's a wind-brass type of sound but if it's an original performance or a sample from a sample library or a song I don't know. I would guess it's an original performance since there's no info about the source but it's a sampler manipulation for sure since it speeds up and slows down the way it works in a sampler when you play a sample outside of its original pitch. It's not hard to figure out what notes there are since it's just 2-3 notes performance and then you can try it out with trumpet or clarinet or whatever works for you.

Say the original perf is C3-F3-C3 (I don't know the exact notes) you render it then fire up a sampler put on C3 and then you play that sample on C2 and F4 for example
