I installed this Debian Linux I'm using now in 2014. It was Debian 7 then. Now it's Debian 12.12. You can easily upgrade Debian as the new versions get released. It went through 2 different computers and 4 different boot devices, soon to be 5th (new NVMe). Same system I installed in 2014 and works *even better* than when I installed it. I can put it on my USB and use it on any PC computer, too, so easily - it fits on a 8GB USB stick. Remember those? People will give you one for free.

With WINE I can run any x86 or x64 plugin or game, or program for Windows from early 2000s onwards. Something even Windows users can't boast about, and Mac users can't run programs from even just few years ago. I also have Photoshop CS that works, but I don't use it. I've always hated Adobe...

Top that with any other OS. Please. I get all the best from all OSes, but no garbage everybody is fighting with all the time. Linux is freedom.

p.s. yes, not everything works as easily, though, and there is a chance it doesn't work, too, but it's a little price to pay for all the advantages. I particularly hated installing Windows every couple of years and having to disable more and more garbage every time. Now I find it funny how people have problems with Windows garbage MS keeps putting in and their failed updates. It's truly very entertaining to watch it all happening.

Cheeeers! Linux is the future. At some point you will not be able to escape it. We are the Borg!

Hehe.. yeah, they have a LOT of those "update glitches". Like at least one every patch tuesday (if that's even a thing anymore). Like, "oh. sorry 'bout that, we just bricked your win10 system with our shitty update b.s.... - but we DO have the latest windows 11 oem image for you so that you can make your machine into an even larger toilet for all our corporate garp"...

Linux for audio it's suffering. Get a Mac Mini Apple Silicon and forget about audio problems, brother. I'm done this already. Super smooth workflow.

 

I thought that too but i think sequoia is the last version of macos that isn't fucked, Tahoe is dogshit and Windows 11 is total dogwipe.

I wiped windows on my desktop and installed linux, it runs audio apps via wine and its just as fast and snappy as an apple silicon mac.

Two words: Core audio and wineasio.

 

I think we all need to understand what the phrase ‘Linux Audio’ means. Is this a technical implementation of audio streaming within the system, or is it a problem with the plug-in tools? My personal experience with ALSA/Pipewire has been positive. As far as I understand, compared to WASAPI, audio in Linux has significant advantages (my conclusion based on the information I found on the internet).

But if this all relates to plugins and tools for creating music, then that's a different story. Linux needs support not only from professional users but also from developers.

that said, there are so many more interesting ways to repurpose older computer such as home server or NAS where Linux really shines

 

RME interfaces like Babyface Pro (FS) or your own HDSPeAIO work with Linux straight out of the box and that's enough reasons to avoid it, right?

This is what spills out when you can't resist the urge to denigrate your peers' tools, but are unable to come up with anything logically coherent.

Linux IS suffering for everything apart using straight simple releases like Mint and sticking to "every day use" (browser, mails ...).

Everything else is suffering (from a guy who maintained servers, Linux AND Windows).

Linux fanboys are like Reaper, Apple ... fanboys : even when you prove them wrong, their ideology try to find "something else".
At least, Win users don't pretend it being "the best".

On my side, i stick on windows for different reasons.
And i still admit Apple MacOSX being superior in many ways, like Reaper is superior in many ways ... but i still hate it anyway.
Because Reaper is like Linux : you can make a lot of things ... but you need to do it YOURSELF.

I've tested several Linux systems myself and even installed and tested BeOs out of curiosity. One student reported that he spent all night trying to install a printer. Suseberg Linux... they complained. I even bought and read a Linux workbook. Linux and open source are great for cities that want to escape the Microsoft monopoly; it's also a cost issue for the cities.

I quickly deleted Linux, my curiosity satisfied, and then I went back to Windows 7, Windows 10, and now Windows 11. With Windows, you just click quickly with the laser mouse. Everything flows, it's clear, you don't have to rethink, and you can use a lot more software and hardware with Windows. Of course, you have to learn and experiment, and have a good backup strategy in case Windows crashes your PC with its updates, or your friendly neighbor takes your computer out of commission with ransomware.

Today, a lot is perceived but little is known. Much is myth and legend, and much is half-knowledge. I understand people who switch to Linux and make music there, but you have to love and enjoy Linux, because you have to relearn a lot.

Greetings to the Linux user @Mynock. Some users have a point of view that they defend, right or wrong, with all their might.

It's not easy with some VSTi/synthesizer manufacturers either; some simply don't find a good graphic designer for the graphical interface, and the user is left with the hard work if they don't like the color. Many manufacturers don't even realize that the users, i.e., the buyers, would pay more money for a very good, important instrument if their wishes were realized in the device.

Since everyone's talking past each other and few are listening, the VSTi $ VST product looks the same. It would also be more helpful if people came together to pool their knowledge; they would be much more successful. If egos don't allow that, we won't get anywhere.

 

That "ugly" app does not need installing, it can reside anywhere, just click on it. There's no patching of kernel, no compiling, no imaginary obstacles trumpeted by Linux haters, just their undiluted bigoted ignorance and that uncontrollable toxic urge to piss on someone else's parade. Beautiful people, inside and outside.

All the routing, individual levels, panning, and phantom power in the Babyface Pro (FS) are controlled in Linux by the app. Being USB class compliant, all the inputs and outputs are accessible right away, without any app, without any drivers, unlike Windows. The DSP in the Babyface is not much more than an afterthought anyway, its absence is hardly a cause for "subpar experience" and definitely nowhere near a valid reason to dis the entire platform.

But don't let the frontal collision with some pesky facts and basic logic stop you, dig yourself deeper.

 

So you openly hate Reaper and equate it to Linux. And on the matter of suitability of Linux for music production you appeal to authority because you maintained servers.

No wonder you repeat countless times debunked claims regarding command lines. No wonder neither of you haters would ever mention AV Linux.

Nobody claims Linux is a great platform for music production, let alone the best. It's a straw man argument. However, Linux is perfectly usable within its constraints and has its comparative advantages. So no, proving declared haters wrong using facts does not make one a fanboy.

 

The fact that someone is lazy or prefers spending more time on TikTok than tweaking their tools says nothing about the tools themselves. A purely consumerist approach is unlikely to produce great results

There is nothing lazy about not working stupid. Someone can fire up their Linux machine and congratulate themselves how smart they are, maybe compile every silly little thing themselves in Gentoo or whatnot. At the end of the day, you are still using 90% of the same programs and plugins you would be on a closed source operating system. The other 10% being stuff you can't figure out how to get working. Way more than 10%, just being nice.

Name one audio application or plugin that those of us on MacOS or Windows wish we could use and don't have something better for?

 

You can work stupid on MacOS and Windows too, and compile every silly little thing, just like on Linux, but why would you want to do that?

Since you keep desperately sticking to that old tired compile/command line BS, here's a question for you: what is it I need to compile after installing AV Linux that prevents me from making music right away?

 

The thing is, there’s nothing particularly “smart” about running Linux these days it’s about knowing your tools and shaping your own workflow. Otherwise, you can, of course, go with the corporate flow of “working smart” and pay extra for convenience and ready-made solutions. Nothing wrong with that — softies always choose comfort. But some enjoy having control instead of asking for permission. It’s a different kind of fun and a different mindset to have full control of your tools.
