I've just switched after being on windows for basically my whole life, but being a bit familiar with it, and I'm happy about all of it... except music production. I could not get bitwig working for me like... at all. until I stopped trying to use neural dsp. that thing does NOT want to work with my setup and yabridge for whatever reason, although I've heard of other people running it fine

I don't use Linux for music making, I just switch to linux from time to time.

I was really surprised when I saw that my MOTU M2 works in Debian based distro without any additional drivers. Yes, I didn't install anything, it just works.

And I used a highly minimalistic distro MiniOS from a SD card rather than a fully packed distro like Debian/Ubuntu or Ubuntu Studio/AVLinux.

Yes, not all audio interfaces will work. But some of them will do.

If you don't need the built-in DSP, many class-compliant audio interfaces work just fine. Behringer UMC1820 is a popular choice. Third-party applets are available for the RME Babyface Pro (FS), HDSP series and Focusrite Clarett series interfaces, for basic routing, phantom power etc.

As far as multiplatform DAWS: native Linux versions of Reaper, Bitwig, Harrison Mixbus, Ardour, Renoise and Tracktion Waveform work just as well as the versions for other platforms. n-Track Studio is now also available and PreSonus Studio One Pro 7 is in beta stage.

Yes... It's a nice thought, but linux is not ready for prime time in the production area. Have attempted a build every few years to see if it has made any progress, but no. Have to spend too much time futzing around with the linux OS and it gets in the way of creative workflow. Not ready for prime in the everyday OS area either. It's a cool OS to fool with but I wouldn't want to live there.

Not a fan of either evil twin OS (apple or win) but win can be made to STFU and comply and just run as an OS without all the junk/garbage ware that comes with an oem image. Takes a bit of doing to get it there, but it does work. I don't personally know of anyone who does win builds with a oem image anymore.

Well, if they are USB class compliant, there is no problem. My Roland FA-07 and also my Behringer UMC404HD are working out of the box.

It is unlikely that Linux will ever be supported by software developers and hardware manufactures at the level comparable to MacOS and Windows. So yes, if that's how you define prime time readiness, no argument there.

However, for many (most?) people Linux already offers more than they realistically need to produce music. Of course, if actually making music makes them happier than collecting plugins.

Anyway, anyone following these Linux threads knows by now that all you need to do is install AV Linux and you won't have to spend too much time futzing around with the Linux OS. In fact, you won't have to futz around at all. You'll even get some head start vs Windows, where you'll have to install all your music production software, one by one. You also need to optimise Windows for music production, as described in that guide above. But before that you need to get rid of all the junk/garbage that comes with an OEM image, which you say takes a bit of doing to get it there.

Well, yeah, when you put it that way yes... As far as the "futzing" goes I don't think anyone running computers these days really gets away without any "futzing". Basically once I have a win build that's completely ready to use (all futzing completed) I image that off and save it for when I need it for another build. That way the main portion of the futzing is kept to a minimum.

The futzing around I am talking about re: linux is the in-use type - what comes to mind is the obtuse multiple path structures it uses for app configurations and the issues that brings up almost on a minute to minute basis. When a win system is properly "futzed" I don't really think about the OS at all and I am free to concentrate on creative workflow. I'm sure there's probably apple users who will say the same thing. To each is own I guess. Use whatever floats your boat. I just have to laugh when folks say linux is impervious to security and malware issues, cuz that just ain't true.

Everyone's already using Linux in one form or another. Whether that's your phone, your car's interface, your Steam Deck, the touch screen at your fast food place, your watch, your kid's Chromebook, ...

The difference is that those are constrained environments where all the interesting choices have been made for you. With most of these devices, you can't escape their walled gardens either.

And that's exactly what people want, they just can't admit it. They want a locked down Windows that isn't Windows. With exactly an amount of tweaky-tweaky knobs they can handle .. and no more, because anything more than that is completely unreasonable.

Instead of quietly admitting defeat and sulking in humiliation, some proclaim that "LoNiCkS juSt Isn'T tHere yeT", often followed by something like "I WAs a SyS adMiN in 1997". In reality, what happened is that they can't handle the vastness of choice, alternatives and options.

Linux is there for billions of people and most use-cases .. if you leave the tweaky-tweaky knobs alone.

You don't need to try every single obscure desktop/wm from the early 2000s. You don't need to swap your init system for one that's "much faster and more lightweight!" .. according to "guy on forum".

You shouldn't have unrealistic expectations either. Does anyone expect Windows to reliably run Linux, Android and Mac software? When was the last time a Windows update broke some functionality or an app, accidently encrypted your drives or deleted your data? How good is Windows gaming on Mac?

Different mindset, requires re-learning, and accepting one's own limitations. Most people proclaiming that Linux isn't ready are too rigid for 1), too lazy for 2) and too proud for 3).

It's fine. You don't need to be Joey "GPL Warrior" McHackerman, just stick with Microsoft or Apple. You're still a cool guy.
