I'm also tempted to move away from Windows, but 2 things are holding me back: driver issues and unsupported software (RME for me) and having to use bridges to work with my DAWs and plugins...

I have a lot of respect for people who actually use linux to produce music, but I don't think these people exist in the real world

For the tech savvy user there are few limitations in Linux. For the rest of us we use what is currently available & remind developers to strongly consider Linux support.

macOS/OSX is always a viable option especially with new Apple Silicon.

If you stay with a well developed Debian based option for production such as AV Linux or Unbuntu Studio, it comes down to properly matching supported hardware or, creating your own configs to match hardware you already have. This usually involves listing the device id (which should always be connected to the same port), number of stereo and mono channels, allowed sample rates.

No need to dual boot. You just need a computer, Mac or PC, that offers the features you require.

For anyone using dual boot, each OS should be on a separate physical device. Not a partition on the same device. Advice from experienced IT specialists & system administrators.

On the MacBook Air (2014) that my son gave me a few years ago, I tested AV Linux MXE from a live USB session. Everything worked flawlessly. Was not expecting that.

Currently testing on a 10 year old Dell Laptop and so far, everything is working flawlessly. Just not enough CPU power & memory for Carla on that old laptop. Only 2C/4T @2.4GHz, 4GB memory.

So basically you are switching from Windows to Mac. Linux is pure garbage for music production, video editing and games.

I had no problem installing Kontakt under Wine several years ago. Didn't like it at all, but it worked as it was supposed to.

Other Linux users regularly report successful installations.

Here in Europe, in the 80s and 90s, studio sound engineers were trained using Steinberg Cubase and a macOS operating system. Of course, if they complete their training on a specific system, it's helpful to stick with it.

@Daskeladden I agree to disagree, on Linux, most retro games run without any complications out of the box, try the same on Windows 11.
When it comes to audio and video editing, the situation is also quite different, there are at least 2 commercial DAW applications that are the same as those for Windows Bitwig and Reaper. This same goes for video editing you have DaVinci Resolve, OpenShot, Shotcut, Kdenlive, there is simply plenty to choose from.

I am one of those people who wants Linux to become as widespread as possible as quickly as possible.

But in my personal experience, in addition to very significant advantages, I have encountered some very unpleasant disadvantages.
The situation with games already looks incredibly cool at the moment, but I can't say the same about audio/video.

Davinci itself does not support very common codecs because it does not have a licence for them.Is it possible to work with it without any problems? Yes, of course, but you have to take the limitations into account. As for audio plugins, there are alternatives for many of them, but unfortunately not for some. But it's not all bad, as more and more developers are starting to add Linux support for their plugins.

But there are also different software issues.
For example, just a couple of weeks ago, a working drag & drop system appeared in Reaper for Linux (yes, Reaper did not support it in any of the DE/WM).

    My conclusion.

Personally, after spending some time learning the system, I am very pleased with it and will wait until more plugins have a native version. I have it installed on a separate drive for better times.

In the meantime, I choose to disable all Windows updates rather than search for alternatives for every plugin I need for Linux.
