Hi Guys,

In Short, what are the Best 'Windows Laptop' for Music Production in Oct'25 ?
(I can also wait few months, if some Powerful Music laptop is being launched)

Important points -

1) Budget is not an issue (it is, but I'm ready to overspend to be future proof/hassle free)
2) I know Macbook m4 is best - BUT I don't want Apple
3) I own Music Production PC which I love - don't want to switch to Apple ecosystem too much hassle with softwares/warez
4) Win Laptop will be only used for - a)DJing (rekordbox) , b)Ableton/Heavy VSTs , c)Coding (laptop with NPU preferred)
5) Win laptops have DPC latency - does it matter too much for prod ?
6) Pls don't suggest - Powerful laptop 'on paper' - need powerful and smooth in performance/heating

Please recommend guys! Windows Geeks/Old Music Producers with windows laptop - please share Wisdom!

Conclusions -

1) Getting Decent-Good reviews for Asus/Lenovo , Mixed for Dell - so Im excluding other brands
2) I should avoid Dedicated GPU
3) I get confused between Intel vs AMD discussion

I used Windows for a while, but things changed in 2004 when I had a BSOD while working with a client. We had to do everything from scratch, and the client was pretty upset. After that, I never looked back. I’ve been using Macs ever since, except for my phone, which I switched to Samsung because it’s better for overall usage. In my opinion, the Dell XPS series or Lenovo Legion are great all-around options for you. They’re well-built and reliable in terms of performance. I actually bought one for my daughter, and it was a good choice for her because she used it for music production as well.

To be fair, specs on paper are still what you need to look for. You will hopefully reinstall Windows from scratch regardless of what you buy. My three machines are ASUS. One Desktop I built myself, the other two are ASUS Zenbooks. Basically, the high-end/prosumer segment among ASUS computers. I still use my UX501 from 2016 for multitracking in one space. DPC latency can, as you already know, be tweaked and optimized by turning off some services, if even necessary. Focus on a good CPU, some 32 GB RAM. Graphics are not a priority. My second choice would probably be a Lenovo.

So as per your suggestions, Win lappy might work Decent enough. Also brands I guess is personal choice, mostly the "Specs/Latest tech" will matter the most.. like 32 gb ram, i9 processor etc

I din't know DPC latency can be tweaked - will surely delve deeper into it

 

ASUS Vivobook S16 Flip OLED.
No gaming NVIDIA/AMD graphic card : no need of extra cooling option.
2k screen resolution.
i9 CPU.
Double SSD slots.
No DPC Latency problem.

 

Hardware is important but windows need to be tweaked in some ways to be really usesable for live performance. Here is a tutorial to make that config :

Excellent thermal management is important so that the laptop doesn't overheat and the fans cool the CPU sufficiently without over-revving the fans. In my opinion, Lenovo has good thermal management. You shouldn't think in terms of brands; there are good and bad laptops from every brand. Instead, read plenty of reviews and make sure the warranty is adequate.

@trz303 - I personally din't have good experience with Asus but I had low/mid budget lappy - let me maybe look into High end Asus options. Lot of peeps on Reddit are also recommending Asus.

@PulseWave - Agreed, but Im assuming almost all laptops will have Heating/Battery issue after sometime - cuz that's impossible to solve

Can share their experience with Music Production please? if any ..

 

Pay attention to the CPU's base frequency; it should be at least 3.2 or preferably 3.4 GHz. Turbo isn't necessary! You need a consistently clocked CPU! Try to get a last generation Ryzen CPU!

Why these CPUs? The Ryzen 9 8945HS hits your 3.4+ GHz preference perfectly for balanced, portable speed (sustained ~4GHz in tests). The 7945HX trades a lower base for superior multi-threaded consistency (e.g., 20-30% faster in Cinebench multi-core vs. 8-core rivals at similar power). Both are from the 7000/8000 "last gen" lineup, with no major 9000 mobile releases yet dominating 2025 markets.

If you want a laptop with NPU to run LLMs offline, I've heard good stories about Asus Z13 laptops with AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 CPUs (Radeon 8060S GPU), but man they are pricey. Top of the line CPUs currently, though, with great performing NPU (50TOPS). If you'd like a more budget laptop but still great (and expensive) for what you need, you should look for a laptop with AMD Ryzen 7 8840HX or 8745HS which use Radeon 610M GPU, but if you like to play games you should look for laptops with Ryzen 7 8845HS or 8840HS which use Radeon 780M graphics and their NPU can give you 16TOPS of AI performance.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Asus or Dell, my personal bias leaning toward Dells, but it is very hard to find Ryzen 9 AI laptops with at least 32GB RAM and Radeon 8060S/890M/880M, price between ~1400-2900 euro. Interesting. You can be happy if you can get one, and ASUS ones with these specs are much easier to find. Dell's stuck with Intel so you can forget about Dell.

P.S. for running LLMs, Ryzen AI 365 CPU laptops are in between the ones I mentioned (AI 395 and 88xx) performance and price wise. With Radeon 890M/880M and 50TOPS they are pretty great for running LLMs on a (still somewhat big) budget and playing games.

Not all model variants of a laptop type necessarily have this CPU—there are often different configurations.
So pay close attention to the "8945HS" when purchasing.

Laptops with AMD 88xx from any brand are pretty hard to find, but there are loads of not so great 77xx. It's probably better to look for newer Ryzen 7/9 AI CPU based laptops. Asus seem to have a lot of them. Almost like they have an exclusive contract with AMD. Lovely jubbly for ASUS. These are great CPUs for everything and relatively cool.

that's a two-edged sword scenario:
laptops with decent dedicated graphics cards usually have better cooling, that helps a lot with cpu cooling in sustained workload consistency which is crucial for reliable audio work, and if gpu isn't much utilized there is no noticeable heat output to compromise other components,

one of biggest cuprits for DPC latency are network drivers - to be exact, cheap manufacturers use network (wired and wireless) components that are handled by cpu that causes problems - you should go for a laptop with dedicated network stack handling OR face the choice of disabling network completely OR at least get a decent USB-C/Thunderbolt-based NIC (assuming laptop has proper USB-C/Thunderbolt support)

about storage, M.2 NVME is the standard nowadays, if you want two of them, then most likely they'll share bandwidth with other components which is rather bad - I'd rather go for one big (~4TB) internal SSD with its own DRAM (no shitty RAM-shared HMB) that will perform unconstrained on its own

if you're looking at NPU, you're looking at ~45-160 AI TOPs max, that's a very lackluster performance, you should rather look at laptop with 24GB nVidia 5090 that will yield over 1800 TOPs of AI performance,
speaking little more of AI, I can assure you my M4 Max with 64GB memory is way slower than any recent RTX graphics card (assuming your workloads fit into its vram)

Lenovo Legion Pro 7 seems reasonable (it's not cheap, but not crazy expensive compared to comparable MacBook)

@PulseWave What do you think about Lenovo Yoga Pro Gen10s ?
At least their processor + ram + SSD combo - seems pretty good (Im assuming basic/decent GPU will do)

Always keep in mind that you should always look at the DPE base clock speed, not the maximum turbo values. If you're making music, you need a high CPU base clock speed, as notebooks are clearly at a disadvantage compared to conventional PCs due to heat generation. In short, a high base clock speed is very expensive and difficult to cool.

If you want higher CPU performance (3.2-3.4 GHz or more), you'll have to spend more money.
Your models are all great, but the base clock speeds are as follows:

AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 365 Base clock speed: 2 GHz
Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 258V 8-Core Base clock speed: 2.2 GHz

If you're not a gamer, the built-in graphics are sufficient.

Example of a typical PC: Best €100 CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
The base clock speed of the Vermeer CPU is 3.50 GHz, with a turbo clock speed of 4.40 GHz.

Example: 140 € PC CPU- Alternative: AMD Ryzen 7 5800 x

When making music, you need a lot of CPU, and consistently.
The URP is good for video applications and games, but not for making music. Take a look at what your budget allows.
