How does one make money from uploading an extra 4GB?

Try to read. Then count - 1 upload .. +++10000 downloads
    No, just fun.
I remember years ago NI Pro50 had a "Mystery" file (50MB) just for copy protection. We had Modems.
Before there was Propellerheads Rebirth with a 100MB file that includes incrypted codes.
Maybe it's just a ?Try? to prevent "Warez" ?

This thread is barely intelligible. If you are implying they make money because Rapidgator and other hosts pay download * number of parts, that doesn't make any sense. If anything, who makes money is the uploader. Even worse, Steinberg loses money because bandwidth costs a lot of money for every legit user they have. And those are probably more than the people pirating it, as crazy as it might sound.

If their sales and existing user numbers dropped to even close to 50% after changing everything they did at Cubase 11, they would have gone right back to something intrusive again.

Perhaps he was misunderstood, if Stain Boy is doing this to push the installer size up this means longer downloads, more bandwidth, more drive space. This is probably to annoy the casual "try before buy" user with gb of extra downloads.

This of course will not deter others but still interesting.

I mean Ableton seems to include the steams AI models aswell in the installer? but its way smaller?!

so technically Ableton users always redownload the Models with every new version?

LMAO its a joke from the old Radium Steinberg audio releases where they had the guy from Steinberg (Karl Steinberg)with a star trek Borg face back in the late 90's in their installers. It was hilarious installing them and seeing that dude with a Borg face lol.

I dragged this from an ancient collection, this was the installer from Radium :
    Steinberg VST24 3.70
Date of files : 1/20/1998 ( not sure if this is fully correct though).

My experiences with the Steinberg Corp have been anything less than pleasant. Maybe one of the worst plugin companies ever. The fact they own the name VST is ironic.

TubeOhm Fluid VSTi as an example: first paid, then free, then paid again.
Every manufacturer of anything has the right to market their product and set a price.
This also includes freeware that suddenly becomes paid.

The first thing every business student learns at university is: 1. Sales 2. Sales 3. Sales, because the market law states the following: If your product is no longer in demand, you will disappear from the market. You also have to sell as many units as possible, invent good, innovative products that people need and buy.

If hardly anyone buys your products, you won't receive any support or improvements. Besides, the competition isn't sleeping and also has great products. If consumers don't have enough cash in their pockets, they won't be able to consume and buy everything because they don't have enough money.

If fewer buyers buy your products, the products usually become cheaper, and you benefit from it.

Yes, same experience here. I gladly pay the stuff while using warez for a hassle free workflow.
And you're absolutely right, the pile of 'not thaaat bad, we fix it later' bugs stack up to a huge mountain now. There is stuff that has not been fixed for decades.
But I get it, it's not a service model it's pay to own and I appreciate that. And for that to make money you need to have new features that people want.
On the other hand Steinberg wants Nuendo to be the better Pro Tools and when it comes to post production you just can't have certain bugs in there. And if you have, you need to fix it within days. Not years.
And when they're like 'but it doesn't affect that my people somehow' ... yeah, that's because most of the sane kids use pro tools, a market where you want to be, and if you were it would affect a LOT of people.
