TIME Module – Control the Rhythm and Blend
The TIME module is the foundation of DelaySon's echo engine, giving you intuitive control over timing, synchronization, and mix:

• TIME: Sets the delay time for the echo effect, allowing you to dial in anything from tight slapbacks to long, spaced-out repeats.
• MODE: Choose between two modes:
  • Sync Mode aligns the delay time to your DAW's tempo (e.g., 1/4, 1/8 notes).
  • Time Mode lets you manually adjust delay time in milliseconds for complete creative control.
• WET MIX: Adjusts the balance between the delayed signal and the dry (original) signal, letting you blend the echo to taste.
• OUT GAIN: Controls the final output level of the effect, ideal for gain staging within your mix.

COLOR Module – Shape the Echo's Tone and Movement
The COLOR module adds dimension, character, and tonal sculpting to your delays with tape-inspired warmth and dynamic filtering:

• MODULATION: Introduces classic tape-style modulation (Wow & Flutter), adding organic movement and vintage feel to the repeats.
• TONE: Shapes both high and low frequencies of the echoes. Lower values darken the tone; higher values brighten it.
• LOW CUT: Applies a smooth 100 Hz high-pass filter to the delayed signal, removing excess low-end for a cleaner mix.

DELAY Module – Echo Depth, Character, and Space
The DELAY module enhances the depth and stereo image of the delay effect while infusing rich harmonic saturation:

• FEEDBACK: Determines the number of echo repetitions—from a single slapback to endless self-oscillation.
• L/R OFFSET: Fine-tunes the timing difference between the left and right channels to widen the stereo field and create immersive spatial effects.
• DRIVE: Adds tape-style saturation to the echoes, enriching them with harmonics, warmth, and analog character.

The GUI looks definitely OTT!!! I watched the video but I don't get a clue how to operate this thingie....

 

It confused me too, but the website has a pretty good mini manual:

- Drag vertical handles to adjust crossover frequencies.
- To remove a band, drag a vertical handle all the way to one of the sides.
- To create more bands, double-click a horizontal handle.
- Drag horizontal handles to adjust the threshold.
- Drag on the body of a band to change the compression ratio.
- If you need to enter a specific value, right-click any control and its value becomes editable.

 

You're very probably right. Maybe I am just too old to handle this VST intuitively.

BaconPaul Two Filters, a free sequenceable dual multimode filter plugin - Sept 12,2025

BaconPaul, the same developer and also part of the Surge Synth team, has now released Dual Filters, an exciting new free filter plugin.

BaconPaul Two Filters

Two Filters is a new creative free filter plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. At its core, BaconPaul Two Filters features two independent multimode filters powered by the latest Surge Team filter API.

Each filter offers a vast array of different filter types, also featured in the free Surge XT Synthesizer plugin. You can find various ladder versions, OB-Xd filters, all 15 Oberheim Xpander filters, Korg K35 filter, and many more. Yes, even comb filtering is possible.

Cutoff frequency, resonance, and morphing on each side allow you to fine-tune the filter in detail. The filter routing is very flexible and is switchable on the left side. They can run in different serial and parallel configurations.

In the same column, you can dial in feedback with two dedicated controls: feedback and dry/wet mix, giving the filters a raw character. Additionally, you can tweak the pre-gain and the post-gain, plus infuse noise for crunchy, dirty filtering effects.

Talking about filtering effects. Two Filters offers two step LFOs, one on each side that acts like a 16-step sequencer. They are fully programmable with rate and smooth controls. Steps can be drawn manually into the steps.

A random function is missing, and it would be nice to have one to generate random patterns on the fly. Once the steps are set, you can assign the sequencer to different parameters that it should modulate: cutoff, resonance, morph, feedback, and dry/wet mix.

It’s exciting that each sequencer can also modulate the opposite filter, which allows you to achieve very complex filtering patterns. The plugin is still under development, so there aren’t many presets included.


First Impression
I downloaded Dual Filters directly and experimented with it a bit. It’s definitely a no-brainer plugin that no one should miss. I hope BaconPaul will expand the plugin a bit so that it becomes more polished. Thanks a lot, BP.

Surge Synth Team OB-Xf, the continuation of the open-source, FREE OB-Xd Synthesizer plugin

Surge Synth Team OB-Xf is a modernisation and continuation of the open-source, FREE OB-Xd Synthesizer plugin inspired by the Oberheim OB-X. There are hundreds of free synthesizer plugins, but only a few stand out from the crowd. One is undoubtedly the open-source, free OB-Xd project from 2DaT, which is an emulation of, or heavily inspired by, the Oberheim OB-X.

A few years ago, the project was taken over by discoDSP, which created two versions from it: an open-source version that is updated less frequently, and a 99€ premium version with new features and emulation. A decision that was not received so favorably by many. Good news: the original project is back with the help of the Surge Synth Team under the name OB-Xf.

Surge Synth Team OB-Xf
The new OB-Xf is currently in full development, with the latest updates and improvements emerging almost daily. Please refrain from using the plugin in important projects, as it is still fully in development, in an alpha/pre-beta stage.

Unlike the current ongoing OB-Xa project, the Surge Synth Team OB-Xf is a 100% open-source and free Synthesizer plugin and a fork of the 2DaT OB-Xa project. There will be no premium version, so all the new features are free of charge.

Like the original project, OB-Xf features two oscillators with PWM, sync, and cross mod, a mixer with noise, a multimode filter, two envelopes, and two LFOs. Also onboard are the voice variations, pitch control, and more.

The Surge Synth team has not only continued the OB-Xa project, but the version will also offer many new features and improvements. This already starts with a new, lovely UI by SatYatunes that brings almost all hidden, useful parameters to the front.

Then, the engine now correctly produces 440 Hz when playing the middle octave, and it now has up to 64 voices due to the way they intend to implement the unison voices parameters.
In the mixer, you can find a ring modulator and a new multimode noise color, including white, ping, and red. There are also new, separate pitch bend ranges in the control section, along with a new unison voices parameter.

The filter received a significant upgrade with the introduction of a new 4-pole mode, enabling a smooth morphing from 4-pole to 1-pole. On top of that, it hosts all Oberheim Xpander filters, including HP2+LP1, HP3+LP1, and many more.

On the modulation side, the filter envelope now also has an inverted option at secondary targets (ENV to pitch and ENV to PW). A second LFO, identical to the first, provides additional options for animating parameters like the newly added volume knob.

LFO Waveform buttons became knobs, which act as a panner between sine/triangle, pulse/saw, and S&H/S&G. Additionally, the LFO pulse and sawtooth waveforms now have a pulsewidth parameter.

According to the developers, no multi-FX will be added because they want to keep the project as authentic as it was.

Other improvements include updated ranges for the crossmod (2x) and of the ENV to pitch parameter, so it properly matches a full 3-octave modulation range.

Surge Synth Team has also added a new preset browser to the OB-Xf with various patch infos (number, name), and functions like previous, next, or randomize. The latter is not yet implemented.

There are also direct access buttons that allow you to select between 16 patches sorted across 16 groups.

A downer, however, is that the patches and banks created by OB-Xd are not compatible with OB-Xf due to the changes they made in the engine. Currently, the plugin includes no presets.

The OB-Xd has long been one of my favorite free synthesizer plugins. Since the introduction of the two versions, I’ve used the plugin less and recommended it less.

I’m happy that the fantastic Surge Synth Team has now taken over the original project, and I’m curious to see how much community input there will be, especially regarding the patches and future new features.

Surge Synth Team OB-Xf is available now as a free download in an alpha/beta version with nightly updates. Please refrain from using the plugin in important projects, as it is still fully in development.

It runs as a standalone app and VST3, AU, LV2, and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows. For the alpha/beta, you need to follow the steps on GitHub to activate the theme.
